DISCUSSIONS AND ACTIVITIES (What is It?)

MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUES IN CONTEMPORARY ARTS

Contemporary artists are experimental in the materials they use. With the help of technology
and expanded knowledge from other countries, contemporary artists are not limited anymore in
using traditional materials. Some artists salvage materials that they can still use to make creative
forms. They can combine materials like wood and metal that can interact with the wind to make
music. There are some who use everyday items like plastic cover for food, paper for sculpture,
mirror or yarn. Some may use their personal things like clothes or accessories.

 Ballet Philippines Opera - is a ballet company in the Philippines founded in 1969 by Alice Reyes
with the support of Eddie Elejar and the Cultural Center of the Philippines. Proficient in both
ballet and modern dance, the company synthesizes diverse dance and movement forms, from
classical ballet to avant-garde choreography, from traditional dance to modern dance, from
martial arts to aerial movements, into distinctively Filipino contemporary expressions.

 Improvisation in the theater- playing of dramatic scene without written dialogue and with
minimal or no predetermined dramatic activity. Most or all of what is performed is created at the
moment it is performed. In its purest from, the dialogue, action, story, and characters are created
collaboratively by the players as the improvisation unfolds in present time, without the use of an
already prepared, written script. An important goal of improvisation is to enable the individual to
develop spontaneity which is necessary in creating the illusion of reality. The improvisation
teacher must expose students to the theatrical environment through various games rather than
lectures.

Forms of Improvisation
1. Short form – short scenes constructed from predetermined game.
2. Long form – scenes related by story or character.

 Creative Drama – an improvisational, non-exhibition, process centered form of drama in which

participants are guided by a leader to imagine, enact, and reflect upon human experiences.
-this process allows students to actively explore a subject or question through imaginative play
that is facilitated by a leader and may involve a variety of improvisational activities.
-these activities are not scripted or memorize, and they allow students to synthesize various
educational concepts into a personally meaningful form.

Improvisation Games

2. Spontaneous Movement
