Geotechnical Practice Exam #4

This document contains a geotechnical quiz with 6 multiple choice problems. The problems cover topics such as calculating permeability of layered soils, determining the number of piles required to support a load, calculating active forces on a retaining wall for different water table levels, identifying the sieve size used for Atterberg limits tests, calculating the density of an incompressible liquid mixture, and identifying an overconsolidated soil.

Geotechnical Quiz #4

By EM-T

Instruction: Select the correct answer for each of the following questions. Mark only one answer for
each item. STRICTLY NO ERAUSRES ALLOWED.

Problem 01. A layered soil is shown with the corresponding values of K1, K2 and K3

A. Compute the equivalent horizontal coefficient of permeability. (108.9 x 10^- 4 cm

/sec)
B. Compute the equivalent vertical coefficient of permeability. (4.39 x 10^- 4 cm /s)
C. Evaluate the rate of flow per meter width in liters per day if the hydraulic
gradient for the soil formation is 0.70. (79040 liters/day)

Problem 02. Friction piles, 400 mm x 400 mm in cross-section, are embedded 20 m. into a layer
of plastic clay to support a pile cap factored load of 12000 kN. The unconfined
compression strength of the clay was obtained at 120 kPa. Evaluate the number of
piles required in a cluster to support on the assumption that the pile group has an
80% efficiency. (8 piles)

Problem 03. A vertical retaining wall 6 m. high retains a horizontal backfill having the following
properties. Void ratio = 0.60 Sp.gr. = 2.60 Water content = 24% Angle of internal
friction = 25˚

A. Compute the magnitude of the active force acting on the wall if the water table is on
the ground surface which is on level with the top of the wall. ( 248.27 kN/m)
B. Compute the magnitude of the active force acting on the wall if the water table is
lowered at a depth of 3 m. from the ground surface. (149.42 kN/m)
C. Compute the magnitude of the active force acting on the wall if the water table is at
the bottom of the wall. (144.48 kN/m)
Problem 04. The fraction of soils passing which sieve number is used for Atterberg Limits tests of
soils? (40)

Problem 05. In a bakery, water enters a mixing chamber at the rate of 150 liters per sec. through
pipe A, while cooking oil with specific gravity of 0.80 is forced in at 30 liters per sec.
through pipe B. Assuming the liquids are incompressible and form a homogeneous
mixture of oil globules in water, evaluate the density of the mixture in kg/m3 leaving
through a pipe C of diameter 300 mm. (967 kg/m3)

Problem 06. It is a soil whose present effective over burn pressure is less than that which the soil
experienced in the past. (Over consolidated)
