3.0 THEORY
Shift Register are constructed by wiring flip flop together. They are often used to store data
momentarily. Figure 6.1 shows a typical example of where shift registers might be used in a digital
system.
Figure 6.1
On method of describing shift register characteristics is by how data is loaded into and read
from the storage units. Four categories of shift registers are illustrated below:
4.0 PROCEDURES
1. By using IC 7474 construct the circuit as shown in Figure 6.2. Make sure PIN 14 (VCC)
is fixed to +5V and PIN 7 ( GND ) is earthed.

Digital Electronics
2. Use the data switch SW1 to act as the input for D. The clock is fixed to PULSE SWITCH
A and SW2 to CLEAR state. The output circuit to LED L1, L2, L3 and L4.
3. Enter the logic value 0 to input D ( SW1 ) and CLEAR ( SW2 ) to logic 0, followed by
the clock ( CLK ) is set to pulse switch A.
4. Record the values above the first row in Table 6.1. Follow the process provided in
Table 6.1 and record the output.
