Technologies Description of Technologies

 In rural areas, for effective water management on a watershed basis,

surface water tanks/ ponds are used. These tanks are used to collect and
store water during rainy season and the stored water is used for various
purposes such as irrigation/ domestic needs.
 The tanks to a capacity of 50,000 liters are commonly used in many
water stress areas in Maharashtra such as Karjat, Ahmednagar, Raigad,
Thane etc. To construct such tanks by using conventional techniques of
reinforced cement concrete (RCC)/ masonry, the cost may be to the
range of Rs. 10/ liter. Recently, the NGO “Jalvardhini” has come with a
novel technique of water tank construction using natural fibers such as
coconut, banana and Flax.
Technology for
construction of  In an RCC tanks, while steel is used as reinforcement, in natural fibers-
surface water based tanks, the fibers are used as a substitute of steel to cope with
1. storage tank using tensile stress. IIT Bombay evaluated the technology in association with
locally available Jalvardhini and it was found to be very effective. The fiber-based tanks
fibers for watershed have been constructed in lab and fields and used for last 5-6 years at
management many locations and found to be effective.

‘Chironji Decortication Machine’ for efficiently decorticating Chironji nuts

to obtain Chironji kernels (seeds) which can be sold in the market for higher
price. The machine can decorticate 200-250 kg of Chironji in 8 hours of
operation.
Salient features :
• User friendly - The machine is easy to operate
• Simple design
Chironji • Can be operated on single phase of electricity.
2. decortication • Safe -The machine is safe to operate
machine • Capacity - can decorticate ~ 30 kg Chironji/ hour

 The crop residue burning issues and its hazards are widely covered
in research journals, print media, broadcast and online. To validate
this problem team RuTAG had several interactions with NGOs and
farmers. The field survey was conducted in district Amravati,
Maharashtra. The objective of the survey was to understand the
ground level condition of availability of agro residue.
 It was found that Pelletizers are available in the market for various
biomass feedstock, but not for the scale of 30 to 50 kg/h. (needed
for small land holding farmers) Various process parameters like
pressure, temperature, particle size reduction, binding strength and
choice of binder materials are critical for effective pelletization,
which is intended to develop in the present proposal. Further, these
pellets may be used for community cooking application in the
Bio- mass based vicinity of pellet making units.
3. Pellet making  This project shows immense potential, considering the
machine environmental factor, increment in farm income through selling of
agro residue, additional fuel generation and livelihood generation
at farms. The pellets will reduce deforestation and import bill on
LPG.

4. Sustainable water  Intermittent Water Supply (IWS) is prevalent in most developing

supply system with countries. Specifically, in India, IWS is existent throughout the country.
the hydraulic Conventional water supply techniques and pressure management
insulating structure technologies are designed for continuous water supply; hence, they are
not suitable in the Indian context. We have developed a shaft-based
technology, which is better suited for intermittent water supply.
 The shaft-based technology can be customized based on local
requirements and can be fabricated locally near the site location. A
successful implementation and performance evaluation of the shaft in
different geographies will improve the visibility of technology and
enhance its reliability in solving the current water supply problems.
 The results and experience will be disseminated at state and national
levels. Additionally, the project will be executed in collaboration with
public health engineering departments, which provide us the
opportunity of easy integration with national programs such as Jal
Jeevan Mission.
Salient features
• Provision of drinking and irrigation water to rural communities with
sustainable approach
• Improve water supply pressure at consumer end by limiting over
withdrawal
• Enable better zoning of service area for management

Hirda decortication machine that can decorticate 600-800 kg of Hirda in 8

hours of operation. Features of a machine developed by RuTAG IITB are:
• Easy to handle and operate
• Designed for safe operation
• Use of single-phase motor (makes it convenient to use at any place)
• Suitable for decortication of various sizes of Hirda
• Suitable for decortication of medicinal fruits such as Hirda.

This technology has two complementary innovations that increase the
energy efficiency of cold storage systems by up to 50% and reduce their
frequency and cost of maintenance. The first innovation is a new type of

the Mission of the project. Marine Shrimp Farmers, after the purchase of
PL’s (Post Larva) the first 28 to 30 days is the Nursery Phase, here the
shrimp are stocked at very high density in HDPE lined ponds or in
BioFloc Tanks. The water quality plays a major role in the survival and
rapid growth of the shrimp, continuous water exchange increases the
chance of bacterial infections and also increases the loss of many vital
minerals and nutrients from water. Depending on the capacity of the
system the Filter is designed and manufactured specific to the client’s
requirement. It is then installed at the project location. The filter is
attached and operated until the water quality parameters of the culture
tank are under acceptable values after which the filter is moved and
attached to the other culture tank for filtration. This reduces the total
capital cost required to setup the filtration system required for the entire
unit and improves the survival and growth rate of the shrimp by
reducing the water exchange and maintaining the water parameters
well within the acceptable values.

Potters’ community in Poonchhari village Bharatpur, Rajasthan still

follow open firing method for baking tawas that consumes large
amount of biomass (mustard husk and dung cakes), has very long
firing cycle time (even up to 3 days) and has excessive breakage due
to thermal gradient (up to 20%). • Similar issues were also identified
from potters’ community in Kachchh, Gujarat. • A rat-trap bonded
structure energy efficient kiln was designed by IIT Delhi that has
been proven to save fuel (even up to 50%), firing time and reduce

breakage (less than 5%). • Some potters cluster also use powdery
biomass that is fed into the firebox manually or feeder that is not
suitable for small scale firing. This leads to non-uniform firing or
over firing. Over firing leads to high temperatures (more than 1000
°C) that damages the kiln soon. • A biomass feeder will be designed
to feed air and fuel in appropriate ratio into the firebox to suit small
scale firing. • The intervention will reduce fuel consumption, time
and breakage thereby reduce production cost and increase profit
margin.
A cluster in Bharatpur makes jointless glass bangles. • In existing

been tested in the field to provide safer working environment and
save fuel between 60 to 70 %. • The furnace design will be modified
for the ease of manufacturing and maintenance and will be
demonstrated in the field.
In carding twisted fibers (wool) are detangled, aligned in one

spinning to form uniform yarn, felting to make sheets, etc. • In
villages across (Gujarat, Rajasthan, Himachal, etc ) India people are
involved in processing coarse wool (spinning, weaving, etc). •
Carding machine for Currently NGOs involved in wool processing depend upon large
decentralized scale (more than 40 kg per hour) facilities for carding that are
processing of coarse situated very far from them (even 1000km ). Due to this the logistic

small scale (10 to 20 kg per day ) carding machine is being
developed and will be demonstrated in field to card coarse (around
40 micron) desi wool. • This will promote decentralized processing
of desi wool, save logistic cost, support spinners and promote local
processing and livelihood.

expected to be carried out during RuTAG 2.0.
The need for improvement in one of the handloom processes in
