PH101: Physics for Engineers

Tutesheet sheet- 5
Ist semester (2022-23)
Department of Physics, IIT Ropar

1. A uniform surface current K = K𝑧 confined to a strip of width b carries a total

current I . Find the magnetic field at a point in the plane of the strip that lies a
perpendicular distance a from the strip in the 𝑦-direction.

2. Calculate the magnetic field at the center of a uniformly charged spherical shell,
of radius R and total charge Q, spinning at constant angular velocity ω.

3. Two current-carrying circular loops, each of radius R , are placed perpendicular

to each other, as shown in the figure. The loop in the xy - plane carries a current 𝐼0
while that in the xz -plane carries a current 2𝐼0. The resulting magnetic field B at

the origin is ?

4. Find the force on a square loop placed as shown in Fig., near an infinite straight
wire. Both the loop and the wire carry a steady current I.
5. A circular loop with radius R and current I lies in the x-y plane centered on the
z-axis. The magnetic field on the symmetry axis is ?

In cylindrical coordinates, 𝐵ρ(ρ,z) = f (z)ρ when ρ≪R. Use only the Maxwell
equations to find f(z) and then 𝐵𝑧(ρ,z) when ρ ≪ R.

6. If the electrostatic potential in spherical polar coordinate is: ɸ(r) = ɸ0 exp(-r/r0)

then find the density at a distance 𝑟 = 𝑟0.
7. Find the expression for the electric field at P due to a point charge Q at
(𝑥1 , 𝑦1, 𝑧1). Repeat with the charge placed at origin.

8. If the electrostatic potential in spherical polar coordinates is Φ(r) = 𝛷_0

𝑒^(−(𝑟/𝑟0)) , where 𝛷_0 and 𝑟_0 are constants, then the charge density at a
distance r = 𝑟_𝑜 will be?

9. A static charge distribution give rise to electric field of the form 𝐸⃗ = 𝛼

(1−𝑒^(−𝑟/𝑅)) 𝑟̂/𝑟^2 where α and R are positive constants. The charge contained
within a sphere of radius R , centered at the origin is given by ?
10. A single-turn wire loop is 2.0 cm in diameter and carries a 650−mA current.
Find the magnetic field strength
(a) at the loop center and
(b) on the loop axis, 20 cm from the center.

11. For a constant magnetic field B, explicitly verify that it can be represented by
the vector potential 𝑨= (½) 𝑩×𝒓 as 𝑩= 𝛁×𝑨.

12. Find the field generated by a steady current traveling round a square loop of
side length 2𝑅, at the center of the square.
13. Find the angle between the body diagonals of a cube.

14. A particle of charge q enters a region of uniform magnetic field B (pointing

into the page). The field deflects the particle a distance d above the original line of
flight, as shown in figure. Is the charge positive or negative? In terms of a, d, B and
q, find the momentum of the particle.
15. Find the magnetic vector potential of a finite segment of straight wire,
carrying a current I. [Put the wire on the z axis, from 𝑧1 to 𝑧2]
16. A battery of emf ε and internal resistance r is hooked up to a variable "load"
resistance, R. If you want to deliver the maximum possible power to the load, what
resistance R should you choose?
17. A long solenoid, of radius a, is driven by an alternating current, so that the
field inside is sinusoidal: 𝐵(𝑡) = 𝐵0𝑐𝑜𝑠(ω𝑡) 𝑧 . A circular loop of wire, of radius
𝑎
2
and resistance R, is placed inside the solenoid, and coaxial with it. Find the
current induced in the loop, as a function of time.

Revision Problems;

1. Test Stokes' theorem for the function v = (xy) 𝑥+ (2yz) 𝑦+ (3zx) 𝑧, using the
triangular shaded area of figure.

2. Apply the gauss divergence theorem to evaluate the surface integral

3 3 3
∬(𝑥 dy dz+ 𝑦 dx dz+ 𝑧 dx dy), where S is the surface of sphere
2 2 2 2
𝑥 +𝑦 +𝑧 =𝑎 .

3. Show that ∇∥r∥2=2r and Δ∥r∥2=6, where r(x,y,z)=x 𝑖 +y 𝑗 +z𝑘 in cartesian

coordinates. Verify that we get the same answers if we switch to spherical
coordinates.
4. If F is a constant vector given by F= 𝑥 + 𝑦 + 𝑧 . Calculate the value of curl of A
3
where, A = 1/2 (F x r) + (10/𝑟 )r .
