Brief History About Host Company
2
The company I have spent the internship period with is Tesfaye
Tiruneh Building Contractor.
Tesfaye Tiruneh Building Contractor BC is a privately owned
construction firm established in 1990 EC as a class 7 building
contractor by Tesfaye Tiruneh who is the owner and general
manager of the company.
According to Ethiopian quality assurance agency, now the company
is a class 4 building contractor.
The main customers of the company are
Overview Of The Project I Participated In
3
The construction site is found in Lebu, Addis Ababa. The client of the
project is Mrs. Bekelech Hussen. And Tesfaye Tiruneh Building
Contractor BC is the one in charge on constructing the actual
structure.
The project is G+1 residential building that covers an area of about
175 square meter and it takes a total cost of about 1.8 million birr.
It have two living-room, three bed-room, two dining-room, one
kitchen, three toilet, two bath-room, one maid-room and one prayer-
room. And structurally having isolated/spread footing, dog legged
staircase and solid slab.
Command Flow In The Company

General manager: arrange financial resource, sign agreement and

responsible for taking crucial and major operational decision.
Project manager: manage the hole project in the site, assign the
engineers for projects, approve material request and making payment.
Site engineer: controls all the activities in the site and responsible for
the whole construction work.
Office engineer: preparing payment certificate, solving plan related
ambiguities and preparing material list for the given project.
Quantity surveyor: doing bill of quantity, computing takeoff and bar
schedule.
Objectives Of Internship Program
6
General Objective:
To allow the students to incorporate and emphasize the lessons
learned in the classroom into a real-world experience under a licensed
professional civil engineers.
Specific Objectives:
 To allow the students to develop their technical skills, professional
skills and practical skills.
 To show the students how full-time engineers apply knowledge to
handle real work situation.
 To make the students aware of the construction world.

Work Task That I Have Been Executing

I have been engaged in both the site and office works. Generally I have a
responsibilities of:
⇲ Checking the arrangement of pre-cast beams and.
⇲ Checking the reinforcement work.
⇲ Checking the alignments.
⇲ Data collecting.
⇲ Doing takeoff sheets.
⇲ Monitoring the daily workers.
⇲ Checking concrete works.
Office work
8 1. Quantity work : is a process of estimating how much cost,
quantity of materials, labor, and equipment are required for the
given project. In the process of quantity work we use two different
types of takeoff sheets…

Bar schedule Takeoff sheet for formwork & concrete work

9

2. Bill of quantity work : includes determining the amount of

quantity, the rate and the cost. The rate is the price for a unit amount of
quantity.
Site work
10

Setting out : is a process of determining the ground floor finish and

partitioning the cross section of each footing pads and foundation
column.
 In this process the first task is that constructing a profile board and
establishing a base line (center line) to which all other center lines
can be related then we should obtain 900 in each corner.
3,4,5 method(Pythagoras theorem) Theodolite
Foundation 1. Footing Construction
11
 Strike a nail on each sides of the
pad to mark and project the center
of column from profile board.
 Then put the formwork into the pit
hole and sides of the formwork
would be coated with burned oil.
 Stretch string in both direction on
the profile board and extend these
center lines on the formwork using
plum bob.
 Braced the formwork in all sides
and lean concrete.
 Place in position and tie together
the pad and the column
reinforcement & apply concrete
Con’t… 2. Foundation column
12
 First fix short eucalyptus (Abay
Keracheri) on the pad.
 Stretch string on the profile board to
project the face of column on the
Abay Keracheri using plum bob.
 Fix the correct Keracheri on the Abay
Keracheri and place formwork.
 Then all sides the formwork are
braced by yoke (Krebate).
 And another bracing member is fixed
on the yoke (Stanga).
 Finally the Stanga is fixed on Gindila
by checking the vertical alignment.
Elevation Column Procedures
13 Erect column reinforcement bars.
Plum bob
 Then construct Keracheri at the
bottom and provide spacer.
The formwork will be painted with
burned oil and will be fixed in
position.
The formwork will be braced in all
sides by yoke (Krebate).
Check the vertical alignment.
The formwork is fixed on
horizontal brace (Gindila) with
another diagonal brace (stanga)
Beam
14

Procedures
 Construct eucalyptus strut to
support the soffit (Cristy).
 Construct soffit (Fondo) and
side board (Sponda).
 The formwork will be coated
with burned oil and braced to
prevent movement.
 Provide reinforcement and
spacer.
 Finally cast the concrete
Staircase
15

Procedure
 Construct soffit formwork to
support the slab.
 Bar arrangement.
 Construct side formwork and
mark the risers and threads.
 Arrange risers and hanger
reinforcement.
 Tie spacer and cast concrete
into formwork.
Slab 1. Ribbed slab construction
16  Provide props and joists to support
precast units (Modini).
 Construct Cristy & Fondo to
support the beam.
 Arrangement of precast beams.
 Arrange hollow concrete blocks
(Rosa Cometa).
 Construct side board (Sponda).
 Arrange connection bar and mesh.
 Electrical conduit installation.
 Reinforced concrete will be casted
into the beam formwork and on
Rosa Cometa.
Con’t…
17

2. Solid slab construction

Construct props and joists as per
the desired elevation.
Construct Cristy and soffit (Fondo)
for the beam and the slab.
Provide reinforcement as per the
design.
Construct side board (Sponda).
Electrical conduit installation.
Finally cast the concrete.
Formwork
18
Requirements of good formwork
 It must not absorb water from fresh concrete.
 Should be strong enough and stiff to withstand all possible loads.
 Shouldn’t allow leakage of concrete.
Formwork removal
Structure to dismantled Time to be elapsed
Vertical formwork for column, walls & beams 16 hours
Soffit formwork for slab 7 days
Props for slab 14 days
Soffit formwork for beam 14 days
Props for beam 21 days
Concrete Test
19 during the preparation of concrete certain tests are needed to
qualify and check properties and strength of the concrete.

 Slump test
 The mould will be wetted with
water.
 Then the mould is filled with three
layers and each layer should be
compacted with 25 blow.
 Excess concrete will be trimmed Interpretation
and the mould removed easily The allowable slump height is
then measure the slump height.
From 50mm to 125mm
Con’t…
20

 Cube test
 The mould is coated with releasing
agent.
 filled the mould with three layers and
each layer should be compacted with
25 blow.
 Left the concrete to set for 24 hours.
The strength of the concrete is
 The cube is cure continuously in water defined as the strength below
bath. 5% at which the cube is
 The cube is crushed in laboratory at the crushed. And the 7th day
7th and 28th day. strength is expected to be 65%
of the 28th day strength.
Overall internship experiences
21
Technical skill: able to do experiment and interpret data's, able to read
and implement plans and able to work with Auto CAD and Excel.
Professional skill: able to communicate with workers, leading a team
and develop my work ethics.
Theoretical skill: understand the relationship moment and
reinforcement, overlap of reinforcement bars, segregation and concrete
mix design.
Practical skill: setting out of a building, about excavation, checking
alignment and casting different structures.
Problem solving skill: segregation problems, reinforcement shift and
shortages of reinforcement problems.
Conclusion
22

Internship program plays a great role in equipping students with

the practical knowledge of understanding and implementing field
exercises in civil engineering.
These internship program helps me to apply the knowledge I have
grasped in the class room to the real world environment.
This internship program strengthen my theoretical knowledge
and enhance my communication sill.
The program helped me to develop my confidence.
Ambiguity things that I have had encountered before become
clear and bright during this attachment program.
