HOW URBANISATION IS LEADING TO EXTREME HEAT IN CITIES?
Rapid population growth and global warming are increasing exposure to extreme heat in cities,
aggravating health problems and making moving to urban areas less (26) ________ for the world's poor,
according to a study released Monday. Scientists studied the maximum daily heat and humidity in more
than 13,000 cities from 1983 to 2016. The researchers then compared weather data with statistics on the
cities' population over the same 33-year period. They calculated the (27) ________ of days of extreme
heat in a particular year by the population of the city that year to come up with a definition called person-
days.
The authors found the number of person-days (28) _______ city dwellers were exposed went from 40
billion per year in 1983 to 119 billion in 2016. Population growth (29) ______ for two-thirds of the
exposure spike, with actual warming temperatures contributing a third, (30) _______ proportions varied
from city to city, they wrote. Bangladesh's capital Dhaka was the worst-affected city, seeing an increase
of 575 million person-days of extreme heat over the study period.

Bill Gates is an American software developer and business magnate who co-founded Microsoft, an
American technology company specializing in developing computer software, in 1975 with his friend
Paul Allen. His success isn’t by chance, it’s the result of years of hard work and attempts.
Bill Gates was passionately interested in technology and programming since he was an 8th grade
student. His passion for computers made him more eager to learn more about its software and hardware,
and he worked on finding computer bugs for his school. At 17, it was the time for Bill Gates to make a
decision related to his passion – programming. He followed his passion and founded Traf-O-Data with
his close friend and partner Paul Allen. In 1975, Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems (MITS)
released the MITS Altair 8800. Bill Gates and Paul Allen approached MITS to develop an emulator to
run on the minicomputer that would implement BASIC, a computer language, on it. At that time, they
founded their startup, Microsoft. Starting a new company was a big risk, but smart timing and a business
plan helped Gates and Allen. At the beginning of Microsoft, he read every code sold. Bill Gates was
dedicated to Microsoft and asked his employees to be too. Success is easier to achieve when working with
a team rather than alone.
Microsoft is now one of the world’s most valuable companies and is worth over $2 trillion. Though
Bill Gates resigned as chairman of Microsoft in 2008, the company continues to grow.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions from 36 to 42.
For cycling enthusiast Jia Feng, riding to work in Beijing is an advantage as it allows him to get in his
daily exercise and frees him from the capital's notorious traffic jams. But cycling is not always a joyful
experience. The occasional takeover by cars-the number of which rose by almost 5 million over the past
two decades to 6.57 million by the end of last year - of cycling lanes left him with conflicted feelings
about life in the saddle. Of late though, the Beijing resident has found that commuting is becoming
increasingly enjoyable as local authorities endeavor to encourage environmentally friendly travel in the
midst of a national campaign to promote green transition.
Green development has become a key concern of China's central authorities. To achieve a fundamental
improvement in environmental quality by 2035, China will strive to push green production and lifestyles.
Recently, residents near the capital's Second Ring Road were surprised to discover that cycling lanes
appeared to have been widened. Though traces of the original white lines separating the lanes for cars and
bicycles-as well as the ones dividing lanes for traffic-remained visible in places, new lines had been
drawn to make the lanes for cars narrower and the one for bicycles wider. Beijing authorities also plan to
build bike routes along 12 waterways, which will help connect cycling networks between the Second and
Fourth Ring roads and create a green transportation network. The creation of this green, non-motorized
network is high on the municipal government's agenda.
Jia said he looks forward to seeing an increasingly green Beijing as local authorities make sustained efforts
to promote environmentally friendly travel. "As more people turn to bikes, fewer will drive and traffic
will move even faster, so both drivers and riders will be more comfortable. This will make the city greener
and reduce its carbon footprint," he said.
