Know Your Dog

How much do you know about your dog ? Have you heard his many
different barks ? It may be that a dog barks because he is trying to copy 1
the voice of people. Wild dogs never bark.
What a difference there is Between a bark and a growl2 ! When a dog
barks , he holds his head up high . A bark is not a war cry . But when a dog
growls , he lowers his head . A growl may mean he is ready to fight. The dog
must guard his throat3 when he fights another animal.
If a dog comes barking to meet you , you are in no danger . You may
Have heard the That traditional saying1 which says : “ A barking dog never
bites .” But what if he comes toward you growling and with his head
lowered ! Then look out for trouble2 ! Stand still ! Put your hands on your
chest3 . If you do this , not one dog in ten will bite you . Do not hit at the
dog or turn and run.
How true are the stories about mad dogs ? Most of the stories are not
true at all. A mad dog is very ill . Not on “ mad ” dog in thousands is really
mad .
Put a looking glass4 in front of your dog . He may not look at it twice.
His eyes may tell him there is another dog facing 5 him, but his nose tells him
there is not . He can smell better than he can see , so he will believe his nose
rather than his eyes . Your dog will know you , no matter how you change your
looks . He knows your scent6 .
It is strange that dogs can be so clever in some ways and so stupid in
other ways. My dogs like a wood fire to keep off mosquitoes . Often they
see me make the fire burn by putting wood on it . But never do they have
sense7 enough to add a stick8 to a fire that is going out .
What happens when you tie9 a dog to a tree with a long rope 10 ? He
will almost always trot11 round the tree . Soon he will not have an inch to

Super Senses
If you haven’t looked at the clock for a few hours, try to guess1 the
time ! Now look at the clock. How far wrong ? Half an hour ? Fifteen
minutes ? A bee can do better than that.
Men and women who study sciences, or true facts of nature, have tested2
bees to see how well they can tell the time. These scientists3 put out food for
the bees at the same time each day. The bees soon learn to come flying in at
feeding time4. Not often is a bee as much as five minutes late or early.
Do you know that flies and butterflies can taste sweetness better than you
can ? You would have to put almost a spoonful of sugar in a glass of water to
make it taste sweet. A fly would need only a few grains of sugar. A butterfly
would need even less that a fly.
Moths can smell better than you can. A moth can find its mate by using
its sense of smell. It may be as far away as one mile. You could not smell a
moth only one inch away.
You have watched a robin hopping across the grass in search of a juicy
worm . Suddenly he stops and stands still. He puts his head on one side and
seems to be looking closely at the ground. Scientists say that he is listening ! He
can hear the unlucky earthworm below the ground.
The dog, too, can hear better that you can. Dogs can hear the ticking of a
watch held forty feet away from them. You can hardly hear a watch ticking four
Feet away. This means that dogs can hear at least ten times better than you can.
Scientists know that animals can feel things in ways that we do not
understand. While swimming in the dark, a minnow never bumps into a rock, for
it can feel the rock. A snail can see with its whole body. Even a blind snail can
feel the touch of a passing shadow .
From now on you will not be surprised if you see a dog prick up its ears
even though you hear nothing. Now will you be surprised if you see a cat sniff
the air when you can smell nothing ? Not even Superman has the super senses
that nature has given to many animals.

A Put a cross () in A if the sentence that is true according to the story.
And in B if it is not.
