Measurement is the process of determining the size of components using instruments and is key to engineering processes. MEASUREMENT
• Measurement: Is defined as the process of
determining the actual size of a given component
using a suitable instrument. Measurement is also
the key to all engineering processes. The working
efficiency of our machinery, equipment and other
engineering gadgets we use today depends on
the accuracy to which their various parts are
made.
• The accuracy in turn depends on the reliability
and truth of the measuring instrument used in
engineering.
LENGTH MEASUREMENT
Length measurement is defined as a standard temperature that can avoid
expansion problem, the international standard temperature for the purpose
is 20oC (68oF).
TYPES OF LENGTH MEASUREMENT
Length measurement are classified into two viz mainly
• Line measurement
• End measurement

LINE MEASUREMENT: this is an instrument use to measure distance between


two parallel lines engraved across the standard. Example of line measurement
is the ‘rule’ with its divisions shown as lines marked on it.
Line measurements are ratios expressed in terms of some arbitrary length
standard, e.g. theimperial standard yard or the international prototype meter.
The imperial standard yard in fig 1.1 and the international prototype meter,
are line standards.
