Grade 4 Math Centers Lesson Plan

Objective:

● Students will practice and reinforce their understanding of 2 and/or 3-digit subtraction,
including regrouping and non-regrouping, through a variety of subtraction math centers.

Materials Needed:

​ Subtraction Worksheets:
● Math Games 3-Digit Addition and Subtraction Riddles Math Centers
● 2-Digit Addition Subtraction Riddle Worksheets (Regrouping/No Regrouping)
​ Games:
● Farkle
● Subtraction Slide
● Reindeer Dash
● Base Ten Blocks and playing cards to make equations
​ Tech:
● Math Monster Subtraction
● Puzzle Pics Subtraction | Math Playground
● Brain Workout Missing Digits Subtraction | Math Playground
● Video: Subtraction with Regrouping | Math Playground

*Optional Homework*:

Lesson Structure:

Introduction (5 minutes):

● Briefly review the concepts of 3-digit subtraction, with a focus on regrouping.


● Have students make three groups with their tables.
● Explain that they will be doing math centers today, and explain what will be in each
center.
● Introduce any new games and give quick examples of how to play them

Center one: Independent Subtraction Worksheet:

● Place worksheets with names on them on tables.


● Circulate the group to offer support and answer questions.
● Encourage students to work at their own pace and to check their work for accuracy.

Optional Activity for Early Finishers: Early Finishers Worksheets:

● For students who finish the subtraction worksheet early, provide the option to work on
the early finishers worksheets.
● These worksheets can serve as additional practice or challenge for those who complete
the main task ahead of time.

Center Two: Games Rotation (20 minutes):

● Encourage students to work together and try new games and strategies to strengthen their
subtraction skills. The options at this group will be:
● Station 1: Farkle
● Station 2: Subtraction Slide
● Station 3: Reindeer Dash
● Station 4: Base Ten Blocks and playing cards to make equations
● Provide guidance as necessary.

Center 3: Tech Rotation:

● Have students explore the different subtraction games and activities on mathplayground
such as:
● Math Monster Subtraction
● Puzzle Pics Subtraction | Math Playground
● Brain Workout Missing Digits Subtraction | Math Playground
● Video: Subtraction with Regrouping | Math Playground
● Monitor student progress and address any questions.

Conclusion (5 minutes):

● Gather the class and discuss their experiences with the independent subtraction
worksheet.
● Reflect on the importance of independent practice and self-checking in improving math
skills.
● Ask students if there were any key concepts that emerged during the independent work
time.

Homework (Optional):
● Assign math coluring sheet as optional homework. Encourage them to complete it to get
a bonus.

Assessment:

● Observe students during the independent subtraction worksheet activity.


● Review completed worksheets for accuracy and understanding.
● Use informal discussions to gauge comprehension and identify areas for further
instruction.
