(AS - GROUP 4) E-Learning VS Classroom Learning

This document discusses and compares e-learning and classroom learning. It covers the introduction, theories, research methods, analysis, conclusion, and references. The theories section defines e-learning and classroom learning and discusses their advantages and disadvantages. Both have similarities but also differences in how learning activities are conducted. The analysis indicates preferences vary between the two methods. The conclusion suggests balancing both approaches as each has benefits for modern education.

I. INTRODUCTION
A process of gaining understanding, knowledge, abilities through studies,
experience, or being educated is called learning (Richard Gross in Lade & Patil,
2021, p. d236).
Students can have interactive learning, motivation, and accessibility of
learning in traditional learning or also known as classroom learning.

Lade & Patil stated that interactive learning creates a direct communication
between teacher and students. With that being the case, students are able to
develop their group work, share their opinion directly, and clear up their
doubts regarding the subject they learn immediately (2021, p. d236).
I. INTRODUCTION
On the other hand, the advancements of technology and the occurence of
COVID-19 have caused e-learning to be more known.

According to Lade & Patil, 2021, p. d236, in worldwide, more than 1.2
billion students are out of school. It also caused classroom learning had to be
halted. Therefore, the learning activities changed, whereby it had to be carried
out remotely and using digital platforms.

Based on the previous explanations, this paper aims to show the differences
between e-learning and classroom learning along with their own advantages and
disadvantages.
II. THEORY | E-LEARNING
E-learning is a process of delivering distance learning which is
facilitated by technology; internet (Bullen and Jeans, 2007:176 in
PUSDIKLAT, 2021).

E-learning activities are divided into 2 types according to learning time:

• Synchronous learning means teachers and students have direct interaction in

real time.
• Asynchronous learning means teachers and students don’t have direct
interaction because teacher utilizes technology and various media to deliver the
learning material such as video. Then, the students respond at different time.
II. THEORY | CLASSROOM LEARNING

Classroom learning is a traditional method of learning in

which it needs teachers and students to be physically present
in the classroom (BML Munjal University, 2020).

Face-to-face interaction between teachers and students is

encouraged by classroom learning. Classroom learning also
encourages a direct sharing of ideas, socializations among teachers
and students through group-based projects (eztalks).
II. THEORY | SIMILARITIES
The similarities of e-learning and classroom learning (Lade & Patil,
2021, p. d238) are:

• Both e-learning and classroom learning need a significant amount

of effort.
• In both situations, giving and receiving feedback is essential in
both atmospheres.
• Assignments are an important element of the learning process.
• Both require students to effectively manage their time.
II. THEORY | E-Learning

ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES

• Flexible in time and place to carry out • Lack of physical / social interaction
• Require strong and stable internet
learning activities
connection
• Students can accomplish the • Lack of supervision
assignments on their own schedules • Lack of immediate feedback in
• Unlimited access to learning materials asynchronous learning

• Cost effective for learner • Students can potentially get more

frustration, confusion, and anxiety
II. THEORY | Classroom Learning

ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES

• There is physical/ social interaction • Lack of flexibility in time and place

between teachers and students which it to carry out learning activities
can establish relationships between • There is additional time to travel to
them a place where learning take place
• Students can get immediate feedback
about the learning
III. METHOD OF THE RESEARCH
This paper uses qualitative method: literature review (literature study)
as the data used is taken from journals and other electronic literature
writings regarding the problems discussed.

Literature study itself is a way for researchers to collect information that is

relevant to the topic or problem being discussed. The information can be from
scientific books, research reports, scientific essays, theses, dissertations, rules
and regulations, yearbooks, encyclopedias, and other writing sources, both
printed and electronic (Purwono, p. 66).
IV. ANALYSIS
E-learning and classroom learning have similarities in some aspects
about learning activities despite the differences on how learning
activities are carried out. However, the differences create advantages and
disadvantages.

As for the frequent use of technology, specifically internet, because of

e-learning can be beneficial yet also harmful. It’s the same for classroom
learning which can be beneficial and difficult for some.
IV. ANALYSIS
The advantages and disadvantages about e-learning vs classroom
learning which can affect learning activities lead to preferences on how
learning activities are carried out.

According to the survey conducted, most of teachers and students’

preferences is classroom learning because it has better interaction in
learning activities. However, some of them also prefer e-learning because
its flexibility in learning activities.
V. CONCLUSION & SUGGESTION
E-learning and classroom learning are equally important besides the
differences. E-learning is example of adapting to the growth of
technology in education sector. Yet, it doesn’t make classroom learning
less important.

Therefore, there needs to be a balance in implementing both types of

learning. Additionally, there is no right or wrong answer about e-
learning vs classroom learning because the choice about it depends on
our preferences.
