Experiment No 7 Simulation of Wave Propagation at Media Interface Using HFSS.

This document describes an experiment using HFSS software to simulate wave propagation at a media interface. It defines transverse and longitudinal waves and how electromagnetic waves can propagate through vacuum or materials. The experiment sets up boxes of different materials to model an interface and excites them with plane waves to observe reflection, refraction, and transmission. Three cases are studied with different material combinations for the two media. The results and field observations for each case are recorded to understand wave behavior at different interfaces. The conclusion is that wave propagation at media interfaces has been successfully simulated for various material combinations.

Experiment No: 7

Aim: Simulation of wave propagation at media interface using HFSS

Apparatus: HFSS software

Theory:

Wave propagation is any of the ways in which waves travel. With respect to the direction of the
oscillation relative to the propagation direction, we can distinguish between longitudinal wave and
transverse waves. For electromagnetic waves, propagation may occur in a vacuum as well as in a material
medium. Other wave types cannot propagate through a vacuum and need a transmission medium to exist.
When EM waves reach an interface characterized by an abrupt change in physical properties, portions of
the signal undergo reflection, refraction, and transmission. In this experiment we show these behaviors for
a EM signal. A fundamental understanding of reflection, refraction and transmission can be obtained by
considering plane waves. Here, we visualize the behavior of plane waves as they interact with physical
property interfaces.

Procedure:

1) Draw box1_medium1 with the following properties Transparency -0.9 Position – 0,0,0 x-size – 6 mm
y-size – 8 mm z-size – 6 mm
2) Draw box2_medium2 with the following properties Transparency -0.8 Position – 0,8,0 x-size – 6 mm
y-size – 8 mm z-size – 6 mm
3) Draw box3_radiation_boundary with the following properties Transparency -0.8 Material – vacuum
Position – (-2,-2,-2) x-size – 10 mm y-size – 20 mm z-size – 10 mm
4) Set the excitation location as X- coordinate – 3mm Y- coordinate – 0mm Z -coordinate – 3mm
Cartesian vector setup: Eo vector – X=0.1 V/m Y= 0 V/m Z = 0 V/m K vector – X=0 Y=0.1 Z=0 Type of
plane wave – regular
5) Select the material of medium 1 and medium 2 according to the cases
6) Validate and analyze

Observation Task:

CASE 1: Medium 1 and Medium 2 same (RT Duroid 6010)

1. Observe incident E field(Magnitude and vector one at a time) and animate Magnitude – Vector
2. Observe scattered field E field(Magnitude and vector one at a time) and animate Magnitude – Vector
3. Keep both medium same and observe total field E field (Magnitude and vector one at a time) and
animate Magnitude – Vector.

CASE 2: Medium 1 (Vacuum) and Medium 2 (RT Duroid 6010)

1. Observe incident E field (Magnitude and vector one at a time) and animate Magnitude – Vector
2. Observe scattered field E field (Magnitude and vector one at a time) and animate Magnitude – Vector
3. Keep both medium same and observe total field E field (Magnitude and vector one at a time) and
animate Magnitude – Vector

CASE 3: Medium 1 (RT Duroid 6010) and Medium 2 (Perfect Conductor)

1. Observe incident E field (Magnitude and vector one at a time) and animate Magnitude – Vector
2. Observe scattered field E field(Magnitude and vector one at a time) and animate Magnitude – Vector
3. Keep both medium same and observe total field E field(Magnitude and vector one at a time) and
animate Magnitude – Vector
Result: I have successfully Simulated wave propagation at media interface using HFSS.

Conclusion: Thus we have studied the wave propagation at media interface for different combinations of
interfaces.
