,compression Test and Beam Bending Test

This laboratory report summarizes compression and beam bending tests conducted on concrete samples. Concrete cubes were subjected to compressive forces in the compression test to determine properties like strength and modulus of elasticity. A concrete beam was tested in a 4-point bending test to evaluate its flexural strength and behavior under bending loads. Test results were recorded and analyzed to calculate stresses, moments, and failure modes. The results demonstrate that concrete has high compressive strength and is suitable for construction applications involving compressive loads.

COMPRESSION TEST AND BEAM BENDING TEST

Abstract

Compression tests help us understand how materials behave when they experience
loads. In these tests a concrete cube is subjected to a force. We measure how it
deforms as a result. By analyzing the test results we can determine the materials
modulus of elasticity compressive strength and other properties. On the hand beam
bending theory explains how beams respond to types of loads. This theory plays a
role in designing and evaluating structures because it provides insights, into their
behavior.

1. Objectives

In a compression test, the objective is to measure the strength and stability of a

material under compressive forces. In a beam bending test, the objective is to
evaluate the flexural strength and behavior of a beam when subjected to bending
forces.

3. Methodology and Procedures

Compression test
Before compression testing, important safety precautions, such as safety glasses, are taken. For the
compression test, a concrete sample of sand, gravel and cement is made and poured into a 15 x 15
x 15 cm cube mold, then left to cure for 7 or 28 days (about 4 weeks) and tested.next
experiment. After placing the sample block in the machine, the desired loading rate is indicated
and the operator focuses on the digital display
At first, the reading on the digital display is zero because the block has not yet touched the
sample, so there is no resistance
As soon as the block touches the sample, it creates resistance that causes the reading on the
screen to increase rapidly, indicating a charge is created on the sample
Taking into account that the loading speed must be slow to get accurate readings.
The failure takes the shape of shear.

4.point beaming test

For bending testing, the same safety precautions apply as before

This time the sample is a concrete beam. There are two types of bending tests: 3-point beam
bending test and 4-point beam bending test. The test carry out was a 4-point beam bending test

The test specimen is placed into the machine on two supports and the test begins and the upper
two supports start pressing on the beam, when the upper support touches the beam they create a
bending which creates tensile and compressive stresses and Immediately afterwards the sample
break down into two pieces
It should be noted that cracking occurs faster than in compression testing and cracking occurs
from the bottom of the specimen over the tensile strength zone
Test results appear on the device's digital display

Test 1
Compression: P/A = 1009 *1000/ 15*15 =4484.4
Bending : I= 100x100*3/ 12= 8333.3
M=pxl/6 = 1009*50 /6 =8409.3
MXY/ I = 8409.3x50/ 8333.3= 50.4

Test 2
Compression : p/a = 24.5*1000/15*15 = 108.8
Bending:MXY/ I = 204.1x50/8333.3= 1.22

5.Conclusion

It is proofed that concrete can take compression till high limits which make it
rewarding as application in construction based on compression tests and beam
bending tests.
