WORKING TITLES

● Integrating Nature into Architecture: Exploring the Benefits of Biophilic Design on Health and Sustainability

● From Nature to Architecture: Investigating the Influence of Biophilic Design on Sustainability and Human Wellness

● Role of Biophilic Design in Contemporary Architecture

● Biophilic Design Strategies for Sustainable and Healthy Built Environments

BIOPHILIC DESIGN : Biophilic design is a concept used within the building industry to increase occupant connectivity to the natural environment through the use of direct nature, indirect nature,
and space and place conditions.

PROBLEM

Implementing biophilic design in architecture has issues such as enriching architectural forms, explaining typology, improving
spatial organisation, and connecting it to site and context. When incorporating nature into architecture, careful design and upkeep
are required to solve possible challenges such as structural problems, excessive humidity, bug problems, odour etc. Despite theories
from environmental psychology demonstrating humans' instinctive need for natural elements, there is a gap in knowledge regarding
how biophilic design can effectively enrich architectural spaces and positively impact occupants and the environment.
INCLINATION

The research is inclined towards exploring and uncovering the specific ways in which biophilic design can enhance health, well-
being, and sustainability within architectural contexts. It aims to delve into the theoretical foundations of biophilic design and
investigate empirical evidence to understand its potential benefits. The research is focused on bridging the gap between theory and
practice by providing practical insights and recommendations.
CURIOSITY

The major interest is in researching the strategic integration of biophilic components into architectural design, with the goal of
creating a harmonious and caring environment. The study aims to elucidate the substantial impacts of natural components such as
plants, adequate lighting, and authentic materials on persons' physical and mental well-being, productivity, and overall sense of
happiness within manmade buildings. Furthermore, the study seeks to understand how biophilic design interventions contribute to
the sustainability of architectural practices by encouraging ecological balance and establishing a stronger connection between
people and the natural world.
RESEARCH QUESTIONS

● What are the psychological and emotional benefits of biophilic design in architectural spaces?
● What are the environmental benefits of biophilic design, such as energy efficiency, reduced carbon footprint, and sustainable
material usage?
● How do they contribute to the sustainability
● How can biophilic design principles be effectively incorporated into different types of architectural projects, such as residential
buildings, workplaces, healthcare facilities, and educational institutions?
● What are the economic implications of integrating biophilic design elements into architectural projects, including initial costs,
long-term maintenance, and return on investment?
ABSTRACT

Biophilic design, with its focus on incorporating natural elements into architectural spaces, has gained significant attention
due to its potential contributions to health, well-being, and sustainability. However, there is a need to bridge the gap between theory
and practice, as well as address specific challenges in implementing biophilic design. This research aims to explore the impacts of
biophilic design on occupants and the environment, while providing practical insights and recommendations for its effective
integration in architectural projects. The specifics delves into the theoretical foundations of biophilic design, drawing from
environmental psychology and related disciplines. It explores the psychological and emotional benefits of biophilic design in
architectural spaces, as well as the environmental advantages, such as energy efficiency and sustainable material usage.

The gaps identified are the need for further understanding of how biophilic design can be effectively incorporated into different
types of architectural projects, How biophilic design enriches architectural forms? How should biophilic design be explained
typologically? How does it enhance spatial organization and order? How does it relate to the site and the context? including initial
costs, long-term maintenance, and return on investment.
The research methodology involves a comprehensive literature review, analyzing empirical studies, case studies, and best
practices in biophilic design. The investigation includes qualitative and quantitative analysis of the impacts on occupant well-being,
productivity, and environmental sustainability.

In conclusion, this research aims to provide practical insights and recommendations on the effective implementation of
biophilic design in architectural projects. By filling the gaps in knowledge and addressing specific challenges, this research seeks to
enhance the understanding of biophilic design's contributions to health, well-being, and sustainability, ultimately promoting the
creation of more livable and sustainable built environments.
