2023 Unit 3 Student Experiment Task Sheet

This document provides instructions for a science experiment assignment at Brisbane State High School. Students must select one of three experiments they completed in class this term (insulation, refraction, or water xylophone) and modify it by developing a new research question and hypothesis. They will present their findings in a scientific report following the provided structure. The report should justify the modifications made and analyze the results to evaluate the quality of the data collected. Students have 4 weeks to complete draft and final versions to submit for grading based on their demonstration of science understanding and inquiry skills.

Context

You have completed the following practicals this term:

 Investigation 1: Insulation
 Investigation 2: Refraction
 Investigation 3: Water xylophone

Task

Analyse an experiment and create a justified modification (refinement, extension, or redirection) to address your own related
hypothesis and question.

You must select one of the practicals above as the basis for your methodology and research question. Present your findings in a
scientific report following the structure below.

To complete this task, you must:

Original Experiment:
 select an experiment to modify*

Background
 describe scientific principles relevant to the chosen experiment.
 describe potential limitations in the experiment that need to be modified.

Research Question and Hypothesis:

 design a research question that can be investigated*l
 design a hypothesis that can be tested*
 use scientific concepts and understanding to justify the hypothesis.

Modifications to the methodology:

 design and refine the method to ensure the systematic collection and recording of reliable data*
 justify the modifications in relation to the dependent, independent, and controlled variables.

Management of risks:
 describe how to manage safety and ethical considerations.
Results:
 systematically collect, process and record reliable data.

Processing and analysing data:

 analyse the data to identify sufficient and relevant evidence that links directly to the research question.
o identify the trends, patterns or relationships in the evidence.
o reference data or evidence
o explain the relationship between variables relevant to the research question using scientific knowledge.
Evaluation:
 analyse the method and identify the inconsistencies in the quality of data.
 explain how they may affect the reliability and accuracy of the data.

Conclusion:
 draw a conclusion that links to the research question.
 justify with reasons and evidence to support the conclusion

Demonstrate appropriate communication throughout:

 concise and coherent use of scientific language.
 accurate presentation of scientific report that is concise and coherent.
 accurate representation of graphs, tables and calculations.

Accurate referencing (in-text and reference list) of all sources in APA style.
