What Is A Computer Network

A computer network connects devices together through a series of nodes that allow for sharing and transmission of data in different formats. This enables communication between connected devices virtually regardless of location. There are several types of networks including local area networks (LANs) within a single building, metropolitan area networks (MANs) connecting organizations in a region, personal area networks (PANs) with a 10 meter range, and wide area networks (WANs) spanning states or countries. Computer networks are useful for e-commerce, communication, gaming, education and more by providing easy, reduced cost connectivity. However, networks can also spread computer viruses between devices and overuse of network services can cause health issues from excessive screen time.

What is a Computer Network?

First thing first, what is a computer network? A computer network is a

series of connection points (nodes) that enables us to transmit, receive and
share data in the form of different file formats. It helps us to communicate
with each other and share necessary documents virtually.

Four major types with areas that they cover are given below:

Types of
The range they spread over
Networks

Local Area Network (LAN) Spreads over a building or office area

Metropolitan Area Network Large network of government, individuals, and

(MAN) private companies

Personal Area Network (PAN) Has a range of 10 meters (Individuals and devices)

Wide Area Network (WAN) Spreads overstate or countries

Applications of computer network

E-commerce Buying and selling items online

Communication Video calls

e-mails

File transfer

Gaming Quiz games

Education Information on the World Wide Web (www) helps students

Advantages

A network is very useful for connection and

communication purposes. Not just that, it also has
many other advantages. Below are some of the
prominent ones:

1. Ease of accessibility

Modern computer networks are easy to explore. So, even if you are a kid or
a person new to technology, you'll find it easy to connect.

2. Connectivity

Computer Networks improve connectivity irrespective of a person's

location. In these testing times, we can see live examples as we use video
call apps or Google documents to connect with our friends and colleagues.

3. Reduced cost

In networking, a central server is used that enables companies to store

files in one place and thus reducing file storage expenses.
Disadvantages

1. Spread of computer virus

As computers in a network are interconnected, there is a high probability that if one of the
computers is affected by the virus, others too can get affected

2. Health issues

Computer network provides access to a gamut of services including

entertainment, gaming, and movies. These result in making you
addicted to the content and thus results in overuse of these services.
This excessive screen time makes you feel lethargic, causes eye strain
and body pain.
