Unit 5 Belnded Learning Lesson
Unit 5 Belnded Learning Lesson
Lesson Title: Multiplication is the new Division. Learning how multiplication and Division
relate in a real-world context.
Objectives:
Students will be able to understand what it really means to multiply two real world things by
each other using objects and drawings.
Students will be able to recognize the pattern that comes with multiplication and division so that
they can find the missing number in an equation.
State Standards:
Context: This is an algebraic thinking math lesson for grade 4 which deals with being able to
truly understand what it means to multiply number together and how it relates to the real world.
Before this lesson, students should be able to recall the multiplication table as well as understand
that division and multiplication go hand and hand. After this lesson students will move forward
to factors of numbers and recognize the relationship between multiplication and factors along
with figuring out prime and composite numbers. I will have to refresh the student’s
multiplication facts to prepare for this lesson.
Data: Students will be grouped based on how well they know they multiplication table, as in,
kids who know it very well will be placed in a group with kids who don’t know it as well and
need that extra push/help. This can be based on a multiplication/division test results or how well
they are preforming on homework or how well they are doing on their Khan Academy. After the
group work, the students complete an exit ticket which will show how much they have
learned/grew through the lesson and can be used to make groups for the next lesson.
Procedures:
Introduction (10 minutes):
I will start the lesson by first giving a review of the multiplication table on the smart
board by flashing multiplication equations and asking the kids to raise their hand when they
know the answer. I will then ask them if they understand whether they truly understand what it
means to multiply something by something else. After talking about how the factors relate to the
product when it comes to multiplication and division, I will do some examples on the Smart
Board of groups of real-life objects multiplied or dived by another group of real-life objects.
Then I will split them into groups based on how well they have their multiplication table down
making sure that students who are struggling are with students who have it down pact.
Teacher Directed (15 minutes):
In this group, they will be given counting blocks, and I will ask and guide them through
placing these blocks in arrays so that they can see the relationship and meaning behind
multiplication and division. I will then ask them to try and do some problems on their own with
my guidance if needed. After they have this down, I will use the counting blocks to set up
problems and have them verbally repeat what kind of equation I have made going around the
table. I will then repeat this whole process but using division and not only ask but see if they are
comprehending the correlation between the two.
Collaborative (15 minutes):
Students in this group will be given a worksheet that has different word problems that
relate multiplication and division to the real world. They are expected to work together on this
worksheet. They can either work together by a.) finishing a problem by themselves and checking
with each other’s answers or b.) solving the problem together working through it step by step.
This is great because if this is the kids first station than they will most likely need to work on the
problems together whereas students who have this as their last station will be more comfortable
with the lesson and might work separately but compare answers as they work though it.
Independent Digital (15 minutes):
This is when students will go on to their computers and use the website
https://www.mathplayground.com, click on the “multiplication and division” button and play
array games and can adjust the difficulty depending on how comfortable they are with the
content based on what groups they have already been too. For example, the penguin game, which
is the first game they are offered, is basic fast math with multiplication and division problems,
which can be done by any of the children. They can also choose to work on their Khan Academy
(assuming that this is what the class does) and continue to work towards their khan academy
goal, which would be catered to them. This would be an option to those who have this as their
last group.
Closure (10 minutes):
Students will now go back to their original seats, and I will pass out the exit ticket which
will have a little bit of everything they did in class on it. For example, a couple questions will
involve drawing groups of some type of pictures to represent an equation from the teacher led
group. Another set of questions will be word problems that are similar to the word problems
from the working together group, and the last set of questions would be simple multiplication
problems to represent the technology/independent group.
Rationale:
(Multimedia 1= smartboard power point) This is a piece of multimedia because it incorporates
technology as a way of conveying a message/lesson. This helps with the beginning of the lesson
when students need to refresh their memory on their multiplication table which will help later in
the lesson as they interoperate the equations in the real world. It is of high quality because it is
used by most professionals in their respective areas of work like for business meetings, all levels
of education classrooms, and more. It is a reliable piece of technology that helps many and
according to the LORI criteria, it hits all the bases as it is easy to use, customizable, predictable,
and has many accommodations for those who have different learning types and or disabilities.
Some examples include, making text bigger for those that have trouble seeing the board, being
able to reveal information one at a time for those who are easily distracted, and more.
(Multimedia 2= Math Playground/Khan Academy) These are two websites that can help the
children based on hoe confident with the lesson they are on and can do independently. This is a
piece of multimedia because it involves a piece of technology to help students with their learning
goals of mastering multiplication and division. With the Math Playground, this website will help
kids see the connection between multiplication and division and by doing it faster and faster. For
Khan Academy, the children would already have their goals set for the year so they would
continue to work towards their goals for the year at their own pace. I know both pieces of
technology are high quality because I have used them myself going through school and loved the
way they helped me personally and know that they can work for many kids at many different
ages. Going off of that, they follow all of the LORI criteria, they give constructive feedback and
motivation for each step, they are predictable and easy to navigate, and they have goals the
students have to work towards to keep them engaged. The Khan Academy site is more
accommodating to students who might have learning disabilities but they are both
accommodating in their own rights.
