IMPACT OF VAPING ON
STUDENTS
Presentation By Group 1
INTRODUCTION
The prevalence of vaping among students has become a prominent concern
within educational institutions worldwide, raising alarms due to its potential
health risks and social ramifications. The focus of this study is to delve into
the specific context of vaping behaviors among students within Ilocos Norte
National High School. By examining this issue within a localized setting, this
research aims to shed light on the factors influencing vaping practices
among students in this particular educational environment. Understanding
the patterns, perceptions, and underlying reasons for the increased use of
vaping devices within Ilocos Norte National High School is crucial in
formulating effective strategies to address and mitigate this growing
concern. This investigation seeks to contribute to a more comprehensive
understanding of the issue and in the development of targeted interventions
tailored to this specific school context.
SOME POSSIBLE EFFECTS OF USING VAPE
WITHIN THE SCHOOL PROPERTY
1. Health Risks: Secondhand exposure to aerosols from vaping
can pose health risks to non-vaping students and staff. Long-
term effects of vaping on health are still being studied.
2. Disruption to Learning Environment: Vaping incidents can
disrupt classes, causing distractions and potentially impacting
the overall learning environment.
3. Policy Violation: Most schools have strict policies against vaping,
so students vaping indoors are breaking school rules, leading to
disciplinary actions.
SOME POSSIBLE EFFECTS OF USING VAPE
WITHIN THE SCHOOL PROPERTY
4. Normalization of Vaping: When students vape inside school premises, it
can normalize this behavior, making it seem acceptable or commonplace
among peers.
5. Legal and Safety Concerns: Depending on local laws and regulations,
vaping indoors might pose legal issues. Also, concerns about potential device
malfunctions or accidents exist.
6. Social Influence: Seeing peers vape inside school might influence other
students to start or continue vaping, contributing to a pervasive culture of
vaping.
Addressing these effects involves a combination of strict enforcement of
policies, education on the risks of vaping, providing cessation support, and
creating a positive, healthy school environment.
VAPING POSES SEVERAL HEALTH
RISKS FOR STUDENTS:
Respiratory Issues: Vaping can lead to lung irritation, chronic
coughing, and an increased risk of respiratory infections.
Nicotine Addiction: Many vaping products contain nicotine,
leading to addiction. This can alter brain development in
adolescents, impacting memory, attention, and learning.
Cardiovascular Problems: Nicotine can elevate heart rate and
blood pressure, increasing the risk of cardiovascular issues.
VAPING POSES SEVERAL HEALTH
RISKS FOR STUDENTS:
Harmful Chemical Exposure: Vaping liquids can contain harmful chemicals like
formaldehyde, heavy metals, and volatile organic compounds, potentially causing
long-term health problems.
Impact on Mental Health: Nicotine addiction can exacerbate anxiety, mood
disorders, and lead to behavioral issues in some individuals.
Potential Long-Term Effects: Long-term effects of vaping are still being studied,
but there are concerns about potential lung damage, similar to those seen in
traditional cigarette smokers.
It's essential to educate students about these risks and promote healthy behaviors
to prevent vaping-related health problems. Offering support for those trying to
quit and creating a vape-free environment can mitigate these health concerns.
SOME WAYS TO LESSEN
THIS ISSUE
Education and Awareness: Implement comprehensive programs that
educate students about the health risks of vaping. Offer workshops,
presentations, and resources to raise awareness about the dangers
associated with vaping.
Enforce Strict Policies: Clearly communicate and strictly enforce school
policies that prohibit vaping on campus. Consistent enforcement and
consequences for violators can act as a deterrent.
Peer Support and Leadership: Empower student leaders to advocate
against vaping. Peer-led initiatives, clubs, or campaigns can influence
attitudes and behaviors among students.
Counseling and Support Services: Offer counseling and support services for
students struggling with addiction to vaping. Providing a supportive
environment for those trying to quit can be crucial.
Parental Involvement: Engage parents by informing them about the issue and
encouraging open discussions at home about the risks of vaping. Collaboration
between schools and parents can reinforce the message against vaping.
Alternative Activities: Provide alternative recreational and educational
activities that engage students positively, reducing the appeal of vaping as a
leisure activity.
Regular Monitoring and Surveillance: Implement monitoring systems and
regular checks to deter students from vaping inside school premises.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Implementing bag checks and the use of scanners by security guards
can be an additional preventive measure to address vaping inside
school facilities:
1. Random Bag Checks: Conduct random checks of students' bags
upon entry to the school premises. This serves as a deterrent and
can discourage students from attempting to bring vaping devices
onto the campus.
2. Scanner Use: Implement the use of scanners or detection devices
to identify vaping devices or any prohibited items as students
enter the school. This can be a more thorough method to ensure
compliance with the no-vaping policy.
RECOMMENDATIONS
3. Visible Deterrent: The presence of security guards conducting
checks and using scanners can act as a visible deterrent, reminding
students of the strict enforcement of rules against vaping.
4. Consistent Application: Ensure that bag checks and scanner use are
consistent and carried out without bias, following a clear protocol to
maintain fairness and avoid misunderstandings.
