As the plane circled over the airport, every one sensed that something was wrong. The plane was moving unsteadily through the air, and although the passengers had fastened their seat belts, they were suddenly thrown forward. At that moment, the air-hostess appeared. She looked very pale, but was quite calm. Speaking quickly but almost in a whisper, she informed everyone that the pilot had fainted and asked if any of the passengers knew anything about machines — or at least how to drive a car. After a moment’s hesitation, a man got up and followed the hostess into the pilot’s cabin. A Moving the pilot aside, the man took his seat and listened carefully to the urgent instructions that were being sent by radio from the airport below. The plane was now dangerously close to the ground, but to everyone’s relief, it soon began to climb. The man had to circle the airport several times in order to become familiar with the controls. But the danger had not yet passed. The terrible moment came when he had to land, Following instructions, the man guided the plane towards the airfield. It shook violently as it touched the ground and then moved rapidly across the field, but after a long run it stopped safely. He looked very annoyed indeed and asked us angrily if we realized that these grounds were private property. Father looked very confused and the man pointed to a notice which said that camping was strictly forbidden. Poor father explained that he had not seen the notice and did not know that camping was not allowed. Though father apologized, the man did not seem satisfied and asked him for his name and address. All the way home, we were so upset that hardly anyone spoke a word. This unpleasant event had spoilt a wonderful day in the country. For the rest of the week, we wondered what would happen. The following Sunday, we stayed at home even though it was a fine day. About noon, a large and very expensive car stopped outside our house. We were astonished when we saw several people preparing to have a picnic in our small garden. Father got very angry and went out to ask them what they thought they were doing. You can imagine his surprise when he recognized the man who had taken our address the week before! Both men burst out laughing and father welcomed the strangers into the house. After a tiring morning, the clerks were anxious to get off to lunch and even the judge must have felt relieved when the last case came up before the court. A short, middle-aged man with grey hair and small blue eyes was now standing before him. The man had a foolish expression on his face and he kept looking around stupidly as if he was trying hard to understand what was going on. The man was accused of breaking into a house and stealing a cheap watch. The witness who was called did not give a very clear account of what had happened. He claimed to have seen a man outside the house one night, but on being questioned further, he confessed that he was not sure whether this was the man. The judge considered the matter for a short time and then declared that as there was no real proof, the man could not be found guilty of any crime. He said that the case was dismissed and then rose to go. Meanwhile, the accused looked very puzzled. It was clear that he had not understood a thing. The guard explained that he had discovered the man in the passage and finding that he was seriously ill, had dragged him into the luggage-van. The doctor loosened the man’s collar and after examining him thoroughly, told the guard that the man was unconscious and would have to be taken to hospital. When he heard this, the guard answered that the express train could not be stopped without first informing the station- master of the main- line station which was nearly fifty miles away. Meanwhile, the man’s condition gradually got worse. There seemed to be no way of sending a message until the guard had the idea of throwing a note on to the platform of a small village station as the train flashed past. Fortunately, some one picked the note up and telephoned the main-line station. This was a strange way of sending a message, but it worked. Shortly afterwards, the train was stopped for a few minutes at a small village station several miles further on so that the sick man could be taken to hospital.
