GENERAL PREPARATION
Glue the pattern pages onto card or thick paper and cut out the pattern pieces to make your templates.
Lay the fabric right side down with the grain/pile running down towards you.
Place your templates onto the wrong side of the fabric making sure the arrows point towards you. Trace
the templates with a permanent marker and cut out your pieces. (Be careful not to press too hard or the
ink will smudge and may even show through your material on the right side.)
Cut the back, base and front pieces from white fleece. Use white fleece for the wings too. Use yellow
stretch material for the crest. Use a thin polar fleece (grey) for the beak and feet pieces or similar type
materials.

SEWING
*** Always sew pieces with right sides together and use a 5mm/¼inch seam unless stated otherwise.
Use a sharp blunt object like a wooden chopstick when you turn Charlie’s crest and toes! ***
With right sides together, sew the crest pieces. Remember to sew on the sewing line and then cut around
the pieces out with a 5mm/¼ inch seam. Use a sharp scissor to snip/clip your seam allowance especially
around the sharp curves. This will allow the material to lie better when you turn your pieces right sides
out.
Place a length of chenille stick/ florist’s wire in the front of the crest as indicated on the pattern. Leave
the ends of the wire sticking out by about 1cm/½inch.
Sew the wing pieces on the sewing line Cut out with a 5mm/¼ inch seam allowance. Snip the seams and
turn right sides out.
Place 1 tablespoon of plastic pellets in each wing.
With right sides together, sew the feet pieces. Remember to sew on the sewing line and then cut around
the pieces out with a 5mm/¼ inch seam. Use a sharp scissor to snip/clip your seam allowance.
Use sharp scissors to cut through one layer of material as indicated on the pattern piece so that you can
turn the feet right sides out. Tack these openings closed.
Following the diagram, place the feet in position on the base piece and sew them in place with two lines
of stitching. These should be either side of the openings, which should be nicely hidden!
Sew the front pieces together from A – B.
Sew the back pieces together from C – D and from E – F.
Next, making sure that the toes are tucked out the way, sew the base piece to the front pieces from D –
B - D. Next sew the wings in place when you sew the front pieces to the back pieces. Sew down the side
seams, from G – D, across the back of the base piece and back up the other side to G.
Pin and tack the crest in position, then sew from H- G – F.
With right sides together, sew the beak pieces. Remember to sew on the sewing line and then cut around
the pieces out with a 5mm/¼ inch seam. Use a sharp scissor to snip/clip your seam allowance.
Stuff the points of the beak firmly with synthetic stuffing – I find this holds the beak in shape which helps when
you sew it to the front pieces. With Charlie still inside out, pin the beak in position (with the points pointing
in) and sew it in place. ( This is best done by hand).

ASSEMBLY
Turn Charlie through the gap left at the tail. Stuff the head area quite firmly with synthetic stuffing.
Stuff the tummy area before putting about ½ cup of plastic pellets in the base of your cockatoo’s body,
then add just enough synthetic stuffing to round out the body.
Use 2 black pins to experiment with eye positions before you sew on the 5mm beads/safety eyes.
Lastly sew the tail closed with a ladder stitch.

Your Charlie is ready to love!
