Freedom As A Foundation of Moral Act

This document outlines a lesson on freedom as the foundation of moral acts. It defines freedom and explains that freedom and free will are necessary for morality since without choice, actions cannot be considered right or wrong. It discusses Kant's view that free will must be guided by a universal moral principle to consider the consequences of actions. Finally, it argues that moral acts are established to provide limitations on freedom and ensure one's actions do not harm others by abusing that freedom.

C. CONTENT/DISCUSSION

What is freedom?

Freedom is power or right to act, speak or think as one wants without

hindrance or restraint. (Webster’s Dictionary)

Freedom is understood as either having the ability to act or change without

constraint or to possess the power and resources to fulfill one's purposes
unhindered or in simplest term to freely act and move. Without freedom there is
no choice. With no choice it is impossible for an action to be right or wrong, moral
or immoral. The action is predetermined. That is why freedom and free will are
necessary for moral acts. Without freedom to act we cannot be held responsible
for what we do. With freedom you need a means to make choices. That is where
rationality enters the picture. But we don’t see rationality as inseparable from
freedom. We make lots of irrational choices driven more by instinct and feeling
than anything else. One might argue that our emotions have a rational foundation
that is our evolutionary heritage. But we look at rationality as being distinct from
emotion.

Kant’s Philosophy on Freedom and Morality

Immanuel Kant’s Philosophy of Freedom states that,” Act only according to

that moral principle by which you can at the same time will that is should
become universal law.” This only implies that it should our free will must also be
guided by knowing the things which are considered to be right or wrong. It is
important to bear in mind that every action comes a consequence. It is vital for
every individual to follow rules and other principles that will consider morality in
spite of the freedom possessed by individuals. An act must be considered moral
if its effects are positive and benefits the people, not harming them.

Why freedom become the foundation of moral acts?

We have our freedom, and there’s no limits onto it. That is why, the main reason
why freedom must be based on moral act, to give us limitations, to know what
would be right or wrong decision to be made.

Reason why moral act established

Moral act is established for us to use our freedom not in an abusive way but in a
way that wouldn’t harm anyone and to give a limitation to it.
