IIR Filter Design

This document discusses the design of IIR filters. It begins with an introduction to filters and their use in signal processing. IIR filters are frequency selective filters that can pass or reject certain frequency components. The document compares characteristics of common IIR filter types like Butterworth, Chebyshev, and elliptic filters. It also covers designing IIR filters from analog prototypes using methods like impulse invariance, bilinear transformation, and dealing with issues like frequency warping and finite word length effects. Stability is discussed in the s-plane and z-plane, with the importance of mapping poles from the s-plane to the z-plane to ensure stability in the digital filter design.

Introduction:
✓ What are filters?
 Filters are important class of LTI systems.
✓ Frequency Selective Filter – System passes certain frequency
components and totally rejects other.
✓ In broader context any system that modifies certain frequencies relative
to others, is also called as filter.
✓ Digital filters are discrete time systems used mainly for filtering of
arrays.
Choice between FIR and IIR: (Ref.- DSP by Ifeachor)
Analog filters:
SUMMARY:
Realistic vs. Ideal Filter Response
Revision: s-plane and stability consideration

REMARK: s-plane pole locations: LHP=> Stable region,

RHP=> Unstable region,
j-axis=> marginally stable
Revision: z-plane and stability consideration

REMARK: z-plane pole locations: Inside Unit circle=> Stable region,

Outside Unit circle => Unstable region,
On the Unit circle => marginally stable
Understanding S-plane to Z-plane Mapping:
To design stable digital filter from stable analog filters,
follow the mapping as-

✓ Poles on the LHP of s-plane are mapped inside the unit

circle of z-plane
✓ Poles on the RHP of s-plane are mapped outside the
unit circle of z-plane
✓ Poles on the j-omega-axis of s-plane are mapped on
the unit circle of z-plane
