KEY VOCABULARIES: Engineer, Surveyor, Architect.

PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE: Students should have the knowledge of Basic Technology.

CONTENT:

Definition:
Technical Drawing is the use of drawing instruments, lines, letters, signs, and symbols to present ideas on a paper in the
form of pictures or drawings, which only technicians can interpret and use to achieve their technical goals. The
instruments used in Technical drawing work come in two forms namely drawing materials and drawing equipments.
1. Drawing materials: These are the instruments that the technician can carry along
him wherever he wishes. They are easy to carry, because they are not usually heavy. Examples of drawing instruments
are: pencil, eraser, stencil, Tee square, masking tape/pin, erasing shield, handkerchief/tissue paper, template, ruler,
French curves, flexible curves, drawing sheet, compasses, divider, and glass paper/sharpener.
2. Drawing equipment: This has to do with most of the heavy instruments that the technician may not always carry
about wherever he goes. Examples include drawing software, computer, camera, and drawing board.

Identification and uses of drawing instruments and materials

The uses of the materials and instrument mentioned above are briefly stated below:
1. Pencils (H, HB, and B types): are used to draw lines. H pencils are very hard and are use for drawing thin lines, while
B pencils are very soft, used to draw thick or wide lines. HB pencil can be used to draw both thin and thick lines,
depending on the pressure that is applied to the pencil while drawing the line. Both H and B pencils vary in grades,
marked from H to 7H, and from B to 7B pencils. 7H is the hardest than H; and 7B is the softest than B.
2. Tee Square: for drawing horizontal and vertical parallel lines.
3. Ruler: for drawing straight lines and taking measurements.
4. French curves: for joining points to produce curved lines.
5. Drawing sheet: the paper on which the drawing is done.
6. Compasses: is used to draw circles and arcs.
7. Divider: used to transfer measurement from the ruler to the paper.
8. Drawing board: used to hold the paper while the drawing lasts.
9. Computer: is equipment which makes drawing easier, faster, more accurate and attractive.
10. Drawing software: used to draw in a computer; e.g. AutoCAD, CorelDraw, Harvard graphics, etc.
11. Eraser: for removing mistakes made with pencils while drawing.
12. Stencils: used to write number, mathematical signs and alphabets.
13. Masking tape/Pin: for holding drawing paper on the drawing board.
14. Erasing shield: for aiding during the process of erasing selected areas on a drawing.
15. Handkerchief/tissue papers: for removing or dusting away particles left by the eraser.
16. Template: for drawing special figures on a paper.
17. Glass paper/sharpener: used to sharpen pencils.

Careers opportunities that requires Technical Drawing

1. Architect: An architect is a professional who designs and oversees the construction of buildings and structures.
Architects use their technical drawing skills to develop detailed plans, elevations, and sections that communicate the
design and construction requirements to contractors and other stakeholders.

2. Civil Engineer: Civil engineers are professionals who design, construct, and maintain infrastructure projects such as
roads, bridges, dams, airports, and sewage systems. Civil engineers rely on technical drawing to create detailed
engineering drawings that depict the layout, dimensions, and specifications of their designs. These drawings serve as a
guide during construction and enable effective communication with other professionals involved in the project.

3. Mechanical Engineer: Mechanical engineers are responsible for designing, developing, and testing mechanical
systems and machines. Technical drawing is an important skill for mechanical engineers, as it allows them to
communicate their designs and ideas with clarity and precision.

4. Industrial Designer: Industrial designers specialize in creating innovative and functional designs for consumer
products, furniture, appliances, and other manufactured goods. Technical drawing is essential for industrial designers as
it helps them visually communicate their ideas. It includes concept sketches, detailed product renderings, and
manufacturing drawings that specify materials, dimensions, and manufacturing processes.

5. Surveyor: Surveyors are professionals who measure and map the Earth's surface to establish property
boundaries and gather data for construction projects. They use technical drawing to create accurate maps, plans, and
legal documents that represent land boundaries and survey measurements. These drawings are crucial for land-related
decisions and developments.

6. Graphic Designer: : Graphic designers are visual communicators who create designs for print and digital media.
They use artistic and technical skills to convey messages effectively through visual elements like typography and images.
Technical drawing, although not the main focus, can be used in specialized areas such as technical illustrations or
product packaging. It helps designers provide precise visual representations of complex information or concepts.

These professions demonstrate how technical drawing skills are utilized in different fields to convey complex
information, visualize designs, and facilitate the construction or manufacturing of projects and products.

PRESENTATIONS:
i. The teacher introduce to the student Technical Drawing
ii. The teacher explains the topic
iii. The teacher make the students understand the application of technical drawing
iv. The teacher gives notes to students

EVALUATION: Students are asked to:

i. Define Technical Drawing.
ii. State the careers opportunities that requires Technical Drawing.
iii. Identify different types of technical drawing materials.

CONCLUSION: Students notes are checked, corrected, and marked.

ASSIGNMENT: Give your reasons for studying Technical Drawing

REMARKS: The Lesson discusses the concept of Technical Drawing , materials and it related careers
