Yǒu 有 (to have)
You first came across the verb yǒu 有 in Lesson Two of Essential Chinese. It has a few different uses in Chinese, but as you know one
of its most common functions is to indicate possession, like the English verb to have. Typically, yǒu 有
is placed immediately after the
subject of a sentence, and it’s followed by an object, along with its measure word if necessary.
Wǒ yǒu fángzi.
我有房⼦.
I have a house.
Tāmen yǒu liǎng ge fángzi.
他们有两个房⼦.
They have two houses.
Wǒmen yǒu sān ge mèimei.
我们有三个妹 妹.
We have three younger sisters.
To ask a question with yǒu 有, you can use the question particle ma 吗 at the end of the sentence.
Nǐ yǒu fángzi ma?
你有房⼦吗?

Wǒ yǒu yì zhī māo hé yì tiáo gǒu. 我有⼀只猫和 ⼀条狗. I have one cat and one dog.
Nǐ yǒu shōuyīnjī hé diànnǎo ma? 你有收⾳机和电脑吗? Do you have a radio and computer?
Wǒmen yǒu sūdá shuǐ hé jiǔ. 我们有苏打⽔和酒. We have soda and wine.
Nǐ yǒu zhè piàn xīn de jīguāng chàngpiàn ma? 你有这⽚新的激光唱⽚吗? Do you have this new CD?
Tāmen yǒu hěn hǎo de píjiǔ. 他们有很好的啤酒. They have very good beer.

The connection word Hé 和
Hé 和 (and) can be used to connect two nouns or two phrases. For example, an apple and an orange can be expressed
as píngguǒ hé júzi 苹果和橘⼦ 和
. But note that not every and in English can be translated as hé . Sometimes the English and has a
和
sense of then, as in please sign and return this document. For now, however, we’ll just focus on hé , which is the and that simply
combines two things.
