● Occupancy sensors: These sensors detect the presence of people in a space and
automatically turn lights on or off based on occupancy, helping to reduce energy
consumption by ensuring that lights are only used when needed
● Light sensors: Light sensors measure the amount of natural light available in a
space and adjust artificial lighting accordingly, a strategy known as daylight
harvesting, which helps maximize energy savings by optimizing the use of
ambient light.
- Will be placed at every space rarely occupied such as Hallways.
3. Recycling Center
There are three types of waste that needs to be separated
- General Waste - General waste is everything that doesn’t belong in the recyclables or
food waste categories. General waste includes used tissue, used toilet paper (in the cases
where you don’t flush it down the toilet), sanitary pads, old shoes and clothes, etc
- Recycling Waste - Recyclable waste is actually quite easy to classify because most
packages include a recycling symbol that indicates in which type of container the waste
belongs to : Paper Pack (i.e. juice, milk, etc) Glass (i.e. Beer bottles), Cans (i.e.
aluminium or Iron), Paper (i.e. printing paper, magazines, newspaper, boxes, cartons,
etc.), Plastic (NOT including Toys, stationery pens, small candy wraps), PET Bottles,
Vinyl (i.e. snack bags, dessert wraps, etc)
- Food Waste - Food waste includes anything edible. However, you just have to follow the
golden rule of: “If an animal will eat it, then it goes in the food waste bag”
- (i.e. fruit peel, vegetable peel, watermelon skin, uneaten cooked or uncooked meat, raw
egg without the shell, etc)
- The exceptions for food waste are egg shells, crustacean shells (Crab, Lobster, Shrimp,
etc), clam shells, onion and garlic paper-like skin, animal bones (beef, pork, chicken,
lamb, etc), tea bags or tea leaves. All of these are considered GENERAL WASTE.
For the apartment, the recycling center will provide a number of differents bins such as
Paper, Glass, Cans, Plastic and Vinyl. Bins for general and food waste will also be
provided at the recycling center.
Meanwhile for the residents or occupants. It is mandatory for everyhouse to separate their
food, general and recycling waste. Therefore all premises will be provided with two types
of bins which are general and food waste bins. Any premises that refused to comply with
the rules will be fined accordingly.
For the proposed rainwater harvesting system, we will places the system on the flat roof of the
apartment.
5. Toilet Water Displacement
A toilet water displacement system is a method to reduce the amount of water used in each flush.
It involves placing an object, such as a filled water bottle or a displacement bag, in the toilet tank
to take up space, which reduces the amount of water needed to fill the tank. This can lead to
water savings with each flush. The system is easy to implement and can save a significant
amount of water over time. There are various DIY methods to create a toilet water displacement
system, such as using plastic containers filled with heavy items, or purchasing a water saving
displacement bag that can be hung in the toilet tank. For our proposal, we would like to use
recycling items or natural items as water displacement such as old water bottles or small stones.
6. VOC paint
VOC paint, or Volatile Organic Compound paint, is a type of paint that contains organic
compounds that can evaporate at room temperature. These compounds can contribute to indoor
air pollution and have negative health effects. However, the search results provided do not seem
to contain information about VOC paint. Instead, they mostly focus on Interlux's VC paint line,
which includes antifouling boat paints for marine applications.
Apartment Alam Budiman originally uses facing brick as its external wall finishes. However the
usage of facing brick in country like Malaysia can present challenges due to the material's
thermal mass and its ability to absorb and store heat. Brick walls can retain moisture, which can
lead to mold and deterioration of the building components if not addressed properly. Therefore,
replacing the facing brick with VOC paint might be more beneficial especially when Malaysia
experiencing rainfall and rainstorms all through the year.
