Biology Yr 8

Plants use photosynthesis to produce food from carbon dioxide, water, and sunlight. They release oxygen as a byproduct. Leaves contain chloroplasts and chlorophyll which allow photosynthesis to occur. Roots absorb water and minerals from the soil to transport to the leaves. The long hollow vessels that transport water and minerals from roots to leaves are called xylem. Nutrients provide energy or are used to make new cells. The digestive system breaks down nutrients so they can be absorbed and used by the body. The circulatory system transports oxygen, nutrients, hormones and waste throughout the body via blood and blood vessels.

Chapter 1
1. Photosynthesis is the way of plants making food, using energy from (light, carbon
dioxide, water).
2. Plants use water, which they get from the air, in photosynthesis.
3. Plants produce a very important gas called ______.
4. Material that is made of living cells and tissues is called biomass.
5. Plants use water and air in photosynthesis.
6. Plants make food and oxygen by photosynthesis.
7. Most of leaves are green because of the presence of (oxygen, temperature,
chlorophyll).
8. Leaves are adapted to carry out photosynthesis.
9. The faster photosynthesis is happening, the more oxygen is given off per minute.
10. The special cells that grow out of the surface of roots are called root (cells, hairs,
storage).
11. Roots absorb water and minerals from the spaces between soil particles.
12. Roots anchor a plant in the ground.
13. Roots can store oxygen for the plant.
14. When the above-ground parts of the plants are killed, the roots also die.
15. The long and hollow vessels that transport water and mineral from a plant’s roots to
its leaves are called _________.

4. Epidermis iv. contains cells that do a small amount of photosynthesis.
5. Stoma v. stops the leaf cells from drying out.
6. Palisade layer vi. contains cells that do most of the photosynthesis.
Chapter 2
1. Vitamins and minerals do not provide energy.
2. We need to eat seven different types of nutrients.
