Science 10 - Q2 - LP4 Answer Sheet

1. Electromagnetic waves can have both positive and negative effects on living things and the environment. Prolonged exposure to devices emitting radio waves, microwaves, and infrared radiation can cause health issues like injuries, eye defects, and skin problems in humans. 2. Ultraviolet radiation from sunlight is needed for vitamin D production but too much can cause sunburns, wrinkles, and skin damage. It is also linked to some cancers. However, UV rays also help plants by aiding pollination and support navigation in some insects. 3. X-rays and gamma rays are harmful ionizing radiations that can lead to cancer, genetic mutations, and radiation poisoning if exposure levels are too

EFFECTS OF EM WAVES TO LIVING THINGS

AND THE ENVIRONMENT

I. INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT

We are surrounded with thousands of waves. These waves collide with our
bodies and some pass through us. Most of these waves are invisible but we can
perceive some. Some has positive effects but some causes harm to living things and
to the environment. Hence, it is important to understand these waves so that we could
minimize the negative effects that they bring.

EFFECTS OF UV RAYS

UV from the Sun is needed by our bodies to produce (1) ___________. It helps
strengthen bones, muscles, and the body’s immune system. It may also lower the risk
of getting some kind of cancer such as colon cancer.

UV is used in the treatment of (2) _________________such as psoriasis. This

is a condition where the skin sheds its cells too quickly and develops itchy, scaly
patches. Exposure to UV slows the growth of the skin cells and relieves the symptoms.

Research suggests that sunlight stimulates the pineal gland in the brain to
produce certain chemicals called ‘tryptamines. These chemicals improve our (3)
____________.

Some animals (including birds, bees, and reptiles) are able to see into the UV
light to locate many ripe fruits, flowers and seeds that stand out more strongly from
the background which may help direct bees and birds to the nectar. Hence, UV helps
some (4) __________________.

Many insects use UV emissions from celestial objects as references for

navigating in flight. This is why a light sometimes attracts flying insects by disrupting
their navigation process. Thus, UV helps insect navigation.

UV has positive applications in the fields of (5) _________________ and

(6)__________________. UV can effectively kill (deactivate or
destroy) microorganisms such as viruses and bacteria. For example, when hanging
cloth nappies, underwear, and tea-towels outside on the clothesline. To destroy the
microorganisms, UV rays penetrate the cell's membrane, destroying the DNA, and so
stops its ability to reproduce and multiply.

Guide Question:

1. How do ultraviolet rays help and affect living things and the environment? Cite
the positive effects.

Activity 2 – SHOW ME MORE THE EFFECTS!

Direction: On the meta cards are the effects of X-rays and gamma
rays on living things and the environment. Organize and categorize
which meta card falls under X-ray and Gamma rays.

1. Magnifying lens (or DIY magnifying glass with curved piece of plastic
from plastic bottle and a little water)
2. leaf and paper
