Day 1: Proper Etiquette and Safety in the Use of Facilities and Equipment

Concept Notes

 One definition of the French word etiquette is “ticket” or “label attached to something for
identification.” In the 16th-century Spain, the French word was borrowed (and altered to “etiqueta”)
to refer to the written protocols describing orders of precedence and behavior demanded of those who
appeared in court.

 Etiquette is defined as the conduct or procedure required by good breeding or prescribed by authority
to be observed in social or official life. (Merriam dictionary)

 Etiquette is a set of customs and rules for polite behavior, especially among a particular class of people
or in a particular profession. (Collins dictionary)

 Etiquette is the code of ethical behavior regarding professional practice or action among the members
of a profession in their dealings with each other.
Safety – It is the quality of averting or not causing injury, danger, or loss.
Facility – It is something designed, built, or installed to serve a specific function affording a
convenience or service.
Equipment – It is anything kept, furnished, or provided for a specific purpose.
Physical Ability – It is any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that requires energy and
expenditure.
Proper Etiquette and Safety in the Use of Facilities and Equipment
1. Take care of facilities and equipment – Handle the facilities and equipment with care and use them
based solely on their purpose.
2. Use only the equipment that you already know how to operate – If you are unfamiliar with the use
of a certain equipment, wait for the teacher’s instruction before operating it.
3. Be alert and aware of your surroundings in the training area – Always practice care and alertness
in your surroundings to avoid accidents or mishaps.
4. In performing exercise and movement in general, practice good form – Many students, for
example, may want to perform a lot of push-up repetitions, but doing it improperly or in improper form
may result to two things: one, an individual may not reap the benefits of that exercise, and two, wrong
form may cause injury.
5. Put back all equipment in place after use – Equipment must be returned to its original storage area
to prevent having them misplaced, stolen, or unnecessarily cluttered in the training area.
6. Do not ‘hug’ the equipment – In a gym with limited number of equipment, rotation system is
practiced.
7. Return the equipment properly, and leave the venue clean – Any equipment or facility that has
been used should be cleaned and should be ready for the next user.
8. Check yourself - practice proper personal hygiene and care – One of the common ways to maintain
proper hygiene and care is by bathing or keeping all parts of the body clean.
9. Move on the double; do not loiter around the venue or hang on to an equipment
doing nothing - Maximize the use of the equipment and venue for training.
10. As a general rule, always be nice – By being courteous and friendly, you will improve the
atmosphere during activities.
