and supportive learning environment.

Write a paragraph on how ideas from this reading connect to your teaching practice

I learned from my readings that being open to different ways of teaching is important. I used to focus a
lot on sports, discipline, and structure when teaching. I made sure students were on time, wore the right
clothes, and didn't talk during lessons. I also wanted them to pay close attention during breaks to
understand what we were doing.
But now I realize that to help my students do well in their sports, I need to be more flexible in how I
teach. I need to adapt to their different ways of learning and abilities. It's also important to create a
safe /and welcoming environment for everyone to grow and learn.
I also understand that I should talk to parents and make sure we all agree on our goals. My old way of
being very strict may not work for all parents, so I need to find a balance. In the future, I can make
changes like giving spare clothes to forgetful students, using posters to celebrate being on time, letting
players share their ideas during breaks, and letting them decide how they warm up. give them ownership

The two readings Russell Bishop and Mere Berryman, and Flavell, M. (2017).
talk about how to make school better for Māori students and Pacific families. They both say it's
important to be kind and help students and families. The first reading talks about how teachers should
believe in Māori students and use some good strategies like caring and high expectations. The second
reading says teachers should make friends with Pacific families and listen to them. They both talk about
understanding different cultures. In short, these readings show that being a good teacher and working
together with families is very important for students from different backgrounds. It's all about being
friendly and learning from each other to make learning better for everyone.

Three sentences that sum up the reading:

The reading talks about seven important differences between students who come from families with less
money and those who come from families with more money. These differences include things like health
and food, how many words they know, how hard they try, how hopeful they are, how well they think,
and how their relationships at home are. These differences can make it harder for the first group of
students to do well in school. To help these students, the reading suggests that teachers should become
close with them, make sure they are healthy and eat well, help them learn more words, motivate them,
and use special ways to teach them if they have trouble thinking or dealing with stress. By doing these
things, schools can help students from poorer families do better in school..

This reading is about how I coach players, some of whom come from families with less money. It's
important to know the challenges they might face. The reading talks about seven important differences,
like health, words they know, how hard they try, how hopeful they are, how well they think, their
relationships, and stress.
First, I should build good relationships with my players. Getting to know them and treating them with
respect is important. This helps them do better in my coaching, especially if they are from low-income
families.
I should also help my players learn more words. I can use fun activities to teach them new words
regularly.

Taking care of their health and making sure they eat well is also important. Physical activity and a good
learning environment help them think better and feel good. It's also important to support policies that
provide these resources.
I should encourage a "growth mindset" in my coaching. This means helping players believe they can get
smarter if they work hard.
Some players might have trouble with basic skills like problem-solving or remembering things. I can
adjust my coaching to focus on these skills.
Lastly, I should recognize and help players deal with stress and problems if they come from low-income
families. Creating a practice environment that makes them feel in control, supported, and able to handle
their emotions is important.
In conclusion, this reading shows that I need to understand and help players from low-income families.
By adjusting my coaching to these seven differences, I can create a good learning environment that helps
all players succeed, no matter how much money their families have.

Eric Jensen talks about the difficulties students from poor families face in school. He points out seven
main differences between these students and those from better-off families, such as health, vocabulary,
effort, and more. Jensen stresses the importance of understanding and helping students with these
differences to make sure they succeed in school.
Flavell, M. (2017). discusses how building strong connections between homes and schools is crucial for
Pacific students to do well academically. Sometimes, there can be tensions between families and schools
that make it hard for families to get involved in their children's education. Flavell suggests that listening
and understanding each other is essential for better relationships between schools and Pacific families.
She also thinks schools should support teachers in building meaningful connections with these families.
In general, both readings highlight the importance of recognizing and addressing the unique challenges
that students from different backgrounds face in school. They stress that teachers and schools should
take active steps to understand and support their students better to help them succeed in their
education.

Three sentences that sum up the reading:

This Reading is about Samoan boys in high school, and how we don't have much information about their
experiences compared to other students. The author did a study to learn more about these boys and
how they feel in school. They found that Samoan boys face many challenges, and the study talks about
their cultural identity, belonging, and future goals. The study used a Samoan approach called the
"fa'afaletui framework" and talked to the boys using a method called "talanoa." The findings show that
Samoan boys have to act differently in various situations at school. The article recommends that we
should make better rules and help these boys more in school to make sure they have a good experience.

The reading connects with my coaching in a few important ways:

It reminds me to respect and acknowledge the different backgrounds and identities of my players.
This means welcoming all players and recognizing their unique backgrounds. For example,
starting with a prayer or addressing any outside life issues is a way to do this.

It emphasizes the importance of building strong relationships with my players. Just like the Tama
Samoa value friendships, I want to create a safe and supportive practice environment where
players can be themselves and connect with their teammates and coaching staff. I also use the
"TRUTH" as a success method in my team culture.
It highlights the need to consider cultural perspectives and coaching methods. I aim to incorporate
diverse perspectives and coaching techniques that respect and celebrate the different cultures of
my players. I want to use some of their language in our practices.
It points out the importance of having educational policies that address the unique experiences of
specific student groups, like the Tama Samoa. I am committed to advocating for policies that
support the individual needs and goals of my students to ensure they receive a fair and inclusive
education.

Reading Fuapepe Rimoni

is about Samoan boys in New Zealand schools and how they handle their cultural identity and school life.
It's hard for them to balance these things. The reading says we should understand their experiences and
think about Western and Pacific views in education.
Jones, A. (2012). talks about the challenges in relationships between Māori and European New
Zealanders. Jones says we should face these challenges and work together, instead of avoiding them.
This helps us understand each other better and make progress. The reading says it's important to build
relationships, understand each other, and change power dynamics to make things better.
Both readings say we should embrace complexity, different views, and positive interactions when
dealing with cultural identity, education, and social relationships. They want us to talk to each other
respectfully and openly to understand cultural diversity and its impact on education and society.
