In this document Pope Urban II is speaking to Christians about his reasoning for fighting the
Crusades:
“…your brethren {brothers} who live in the Middle East {Orthodox Christians} are in urgent
need of your help… For, as the most of you have heard, the Turks and Arabs have attacked
them... They have conquered more and more of the lands of Christians… They have killed and
captured many, and have destroyed the churches and devastated the empire. If you permit
{allow} them to continue …the faithful {followers} of God will be much more widely attacked
by them….I ask all people of whatever rank, foot-soldiers and knights, poor and rich, to carry aid
{help} …those Christians and to destroy that vile {disgusting} race from the lands of our
friends... Christ commands it!...”

Document 6
“Crusaders left many legacies, first there was a long struggle between Islam and Christendom.
Persecution left a deep bitterness, and relations between Muslims and the Christians and Jewish
subjects worsened.
Second, European merchants primarily Italians, had established communities in their crusader
states. After those kingdoms collapsed, Muslim rulers still encouraged trade with European
businessmen. Commerce with the West benefited both Muslims and Europeans, and it continued
to flourish.”
