Power of Language Essay
Power of Language Essay
The power of language is a beautiful and complex thing. Since the moment we are born
we are introduced to language and begin to absorb its complexity. It yields the power of
humanity. Language is made up of various things. It is what we use to understand and develop
language. There are various sub branches to learning and developing language. All creating a
way for us to get all we can through language.
Theoretical language holds the goal of answering this specific question. “ What is
Language?”; or “ Why does language have all these subbranches?”. Theoretical language is
centered around internal linguistics. You study what makes up language. For example,
Phonology, Morphology, Syntax, and semantics. Pragmatics can also fall under this type of
language (Theoretical linguistics. Linguistics. (2018, July 27). Those are considered the five
subfields of theoretical language.
As a teacher, you hear the word phonology and phonics often. Phonology is the study of
sound, including phonetics and phonics. It forms the basis of most of the theory concerning
reading and speaking. Just like everything else phonology also has subbranches. Skipping the
sub branches we jump right into phonics, which is the study of sounds within the context of
reading. For example, reading the word C-A-T. You focus more rooted with sound then the
words. Among all of these areas of language we get morphology. That is the study of words
including roots, base words, and affixes. This is how children can break down a word to
understand the word's meaning. For example, reread. The prefix being re meaning again and the
root being read which just means to read something again (Teaching Morphology: Enhancing
Vocabulary Development and Reading Comprehension, n.d.)..
Pragmatics the meaning in the context of discourse. It studies how people comprehend
and communicate. It is able to study language in a connotative sense. For example, we learn that
blue is a color, but it is also used sometimes as a way to describe a feeling of sadness. We learn
to pick up these figurative languages as part of our learning language. This gives us the ability to
know what a person is trying to say or imply. Semantics deals with literal meanings of phrases
and sentences. Syntax is what is commonly known as grammar. This refers to the structure and
the order of word placements. In order for something to make sense, the words have to be in the
complete order. That is why the English language is a bit hard for English learners because other
languages have their placement in opposite forms.
Now why is language vital in the learning of students? Well, the study of language is
important in preparing students for the future because with technology kids are lacking that
development in language. Technology is making this a piece of cake in the classroom. I have
witnessed kids not even attempting to spell or figure out what something means because the
computer does it for them. If we as educators stick to teaching language and dissecting language
then kids would thrive and be well prepared for their future. I am not saying that technology is
terrible, but I am saying it is having an impact on their language and their formatting skills
(Benefits of language learning. ACTFL. (n.d.).
Communication, critical thinking, creativity and collaboration are the key components
discussed in the article provided by pearsons. Of course, all educators have these goals in place
in their classrooms, but do we truly know what they mean. Students who posses or have reached
these areas are able to;
You are engaging with your students and making sure they are able to truly understand the
importance of language. In the future, I want to be able to prioritize communication in my
classroom. I want to be able to keep the curriculum flowing and at pace. Create an interactive
environment that allows students to be engaged and focused. Language and being able to dissect
language is something that should be prioritized in all classrooms. Kindergarten is the basis of
discovering language. Discovering sounds, and the proper order of words is exactly what
language is centered around (Languages & Guest, 2023).
. Language, as you can see, is complex and seems to contain numerous pieces of
information and subbranches. You can see how sometimes it is overwhelming teaching language
and even learning it. It also shows how important it is to teach the sub branches of language.
Language is an important part of growing and developing. Language allows us to communicate
and comprehend. If you are able to take in and understand the sub branches of language then you
could get the full experience of learning.
