Guidelines for Research Paper Proposal (Qualitative)


INTRODUCTION

1 Paragraph. Clearly state the problematic issues or concerns in connection with your
subject matter or MAIN TOPIC with sources
 Provide empirical and theoretical bases (this means provide an in-text citation from your
sources which serve/s as empirical or theoretical bases)
2nd Paragraph. Discuss the importance of studying the main topic or subject matter and the
contributions of studies (use in-text citations from these contributions) already conducted
about it.
3rd Paragraph. Discuss another relevant study of the importance of studying the main topic
or subject matter and the contributions of studies (use in-text citations from these
contributions) already conducted about it.
4th Paragraph. Introduce and describe the philosophical paradigm of the study
Describe the theories/viewpoints/perspectives about the main topic or subject matter
 Present various literature and related studies that discuss about the main topic or
subject matter
 Inject personal discourse on the chosen theory/proposition/model/study
5th Paragraph. Discuss the research gap (what’s lacking/not yet explored about the topic;
uniqueness of the study), and its urgency (reason for conducting the study in the locale)

6th Paragraph. Discuss the significance of the study:


 Discuss the global significance (contribution to literature) and social value (contribution
to humanity and community) of the study
 Identify the specific institution, sector, industry, groups/community who will directly
benefit from the study. Include benefits to future researchers
Research Questions (this must reflect as title)

Present the purpose of the study in paragraph form


 Provide one paragraph describing the nature of the study, the method, the study design,
key data collection procedures and analysis
 Provide the specific research questions; normally follows the order (ex. for
phenomenology)
METHOD
Provide an introductory paragraph of this chapter.
(2-3 sentences, explain what contains in this chapter)

Participants (this must reflect as title, one paragraph only)

Describe the target population (key profile)


 Mention common attributes or characteristics
 State the sample size, the derivation process and justification with literature support

Materials and Instrument (this must reflect as title, one paragraph only)

Describe the instruments used in the conduct of in-depth interview, focus group discussion
and/or qualitative survey (e.g. interview guide, field notes, journals)
Discuss the instrument development procedures if the instrument used is a researcher-made.

Design and Procedure (this must reflect as title and 2 paragraphs)

Discuss in detail key steps and procedures that will be undertaken (from asking permission to
conduct the study up to transcription of interviews made) in paragraph form and in a storyline
format
 Provide narratives on how data will be gathered and the data collection method that will
be used (e.g. in-depth interview/fgd/qualitative survey)
 Indicate time or period that will be covered by the data collection
Describe the method or approach that will be used in analyzing the data and finding meaning
in the transcripts
 Provide details of the procedures done towards the formulation of themes or core ideas
relative to the research questions
REFERENCE
 Follow prescribed referencing style ( APA)
 Alphabetical order
All in-text citations must appear in the reference section (correct spelling, correct year)

 Font size: 12”
 Font style: Arial
 Spacing: Single Space (in a paragraph form)
 Paper size: Short-size
 Margin: 1.2” left, 1” right, 1.2” top, 1.0” bottom
 Page # upper right hand
 No big vacant space within the chapter
 No artistic fonts for preliminary pages
 No word contractions (e.g. won’t, didn’t, etc.)
 Avoid one sentence and one whole page paragraph
 Numbers below 1-9 (in words); Numbers 10-above (in figures)
 Wiki and blogs are not acceptable references
 Avoid no year references/sources for cited author
 Citing the title of article (if no author) and only year of retrieval
 No web sites/search engines as in-text citation; only in the reference section
