Internal Combustion Engine (Diesel Power) Assigned Problems:

pressure of the engine. (ans: 557.57 kPa)

2. The compression ratio in a diesel engine is 13 to 1 and the ratio of expansion is 6.5 to 1.

compression and expansion calculate the ideal thermal efficiency taking the specific heats
at constant pressure and volume as 1.005 kJ/kg-K and 0.718 kJ/kg-K respectively. (ans:
50.04 %).

3. When developing a certain power, the specific fuel consumption of an engine is 0.255
kg/kW-hr and the mechanical efficiency is 86%. Calculate the indicated thermal efficiency.
The heating value of fuel is 43.5 MJ/kg. (ans: 37.74%)

4. A diesel engine uses 27 tons of fuel per day when developing 4960 kW indicated power
and 4060 kW brake power. Of the total heat supplied to the engine, 31.7% is carried away
by the cooling water and radiation, an 30.8% in the exhaust gases. Calculate the heating
value of the fuel. (ans:42,325.33 kJ/kg)

5. The specific fuel consumption (brake) of an engine is 0.243 kg/kW-hr when developing
2600 kW brake power, the calorific value of the fuel being 42 MJ/kg. Forty tons of
lubricating oil circulate through the engine per hour, the inlet temperature is 24 C and the
outlet temperature is 49 C. Taking the specific heat of the lubricating oil as 2.1 kJ/kg-K,
calculate the heat carried away by it as a percentage of the heat supplied to engine.
(7.91%)

6. The mean effective pressure measured from the indicator diagram taken off a single-
cylinder four -stroke engine was 9.93 bar when running at 5 rev/s and developing a brake
power of 4.33 kW. The number of explosion per minute was 123 and the gas consumption
3.1 m3/hr. The diameter of the cylinder is 180mm, stroke 300 mm, and the calorific value
of the gas 17.6 MJ/m3. Calculate the brake thermal efficiency. (ans::28.57%)

7. A single acting, 8-cylinder, 4-stroke cycle diesel engine with a bore to stroke of 142.10
mm x 210.45 mm operates at 1200 rpm. The load on the brake arm at 1 m is 150 kg. What
is the brake mean effective pressure in kPa. (ans: 692.55kPa)

8. A 16-cylinder V-type diesel engine is directly coupled to ¾ MW AC generator. Calculate

the brake power of the engine if generator efficiency is 90 %. (ans: 833.33 kW)

9. The specific gravity of oil tested at 29.4 oC is 0.852. Find its API degrees. (ans:32.98)

10. An engine on test developed 154 BHP steadily for 30 minutes during which it consumed
15.34 kg fuel. This same fuel when tested at 23.9oC. with 15.6oC hydrometer, showed SG
of 0.905. Calculate thermal efficiency based on BHP and Q h. (ans: 30.34%)

11. What ideal thermal efficiency is possible from a diesel having a compression ratio of 15 ,
A:F = 40:1, QA =42,800 kJ/kg? Take Cp = 1.05 kJ/kg-K and t1 = 15.6oC. (ans: 59.55 %)

12. A 34.37 cm x 55.88 cm x 327 rpm, 16 cylinder, 4-cycle stationary diesel engine is
connected to a 3.125 kVA (80% power factor) generator. It also drives a 30kW exciter.
Assume a generator efficiency of 92 % and determine the brake mean effective pressure
at rated load in kg/cm2. (ans: 9.43 kg/cm2)

13. An engine-type generator with 30 poles generates 3-phase 60-cycle current at 600 V. Its
rated output is 400 kW. Engine (6 cylinder, 4 cycle) specifications, 40.64 cm x 50.8 cm x
240 rpm. Find the brake mean effective pressure existing when line current is 360 amp.,
power factor 0.80. Assume an actual generator efficiency of 89.4 % at ¾ load. (ans:423.38

14. Estimate the fuel storage tank capacity for a diesel plant having 5,000 kW installed
capacity. Expected plant capacity factor, 55 %, expected average fuel rate is 2.85 kW-hr /
Li. Fuel contract is to be made for semi-monthly delivery, but allow 100% extra for
contingency. (694,734.84 liters)

15. Using median data from figure 6-15 in page 164 of Morse. Find the oil storage volume in
m3, needed for a two week supply of 25 degrees API fuel oil to operate a 1014-hp engine
70% of the time at full load, 10% at ¾ load. It is idle 20 % of the time. (ans: 53.9 m3)

16. A diesel plant contains three 2500kW units that generate the equivalent of full capacity
for 2000-hr per year each. Fuel oil will be delivered monthly, but the storage capacity of
