Q1: Correlate the Big Five Personality Theory with each of the Traits of an Effective Leader as

shown in the below diagrams (1 & 2)

Diagram -1: The Big Five Personality Traits

Diagram -2: Traits of Effective Leadership

The above diagrams (1 &2) represent interrelated concepts and characteristics of leadership
and personality traits. Each has manifested in one another. This is because personality traits
have direct implication on leadership trait of a person. A leader’s trait, obviously, affected by
his/her personality traits.
Keeping these facts in mind The Big Five Personality Theory and the Traits of Effective
Leadership depicted in the above diagrams can be correlated in the following manner.
1. SURGENCY
The Surgency personality dimension is a leadership and extraversion traits. People strong in
Surgency personality traits want to be in charge. Their dominant behaviour ranges from interest
in getting ahead and leading through competing and influencing. People weak in Surgency
want to be followers, and don’t want to compete or influence (Lussier and Achua 2010:34).
Dominance is one of the two major traits of the Surgency (ibid: 37).
2. AGREEABLENESS
As Organ and Lingl (1995, cited in Judge etal, 2002:531) agreeableness is defined as “getting
along with others in pleasant, satisfying relationships.” A person with agreeable personality has
a trait of Sensitivity to others. According to Lussier and Achua (2010:37) sensitivity to others
refers to understanding of group members as individuals, what their positions on issues are, and
how best to communicate with and influence them.
To sum up a person with Agreeable Personality trait manifest ‘Sensitivity to Others’ Trait in
his/her leadership.
3. CONSCIENTIOUSNESS
Conscientiousness is about how a person controls, regulates and directs his/her impulses.
Conscientiousness is also on a continuum between responsible /dependable to
irresponsible/undependable (Lussier and Achua 2010:35).
Conscientiousness is personality dimension which includes traits of effective leaders such as
high energy, self-confidence and integrity.
4. OPENNESS -TO- EXPERIENCE
As Judge etal, (2002:531) stated Openness to Experience is related to scientific and Artistic
creativity, divergent thinking, less religiosity and political liberalism. Openness to experience
is a double edged sword that predisposes individuals to feel both the good and the bad more
deeply.
Robert N. Lussier and Christopher F. Achua also come up with the similar line of argument
with Timothy A. Judge etal (2002). They explained openness-to-experience personality
dimension as traits related to being willing to change and try new things. Persons with this
personality trait are imaginative, non-conforming, unconventional, and autonomous, while
those with a weak openness dimension avoid change and new things Lussier and Achua
(2010:35).
In general, individuals with openness -to-experience exhibit the following traits of leadership.
These are, Internal Locus of Control, Intelligence and Flexibility.
5. ADJUSTMENT
Adjustment as a personality trait related to emotional stability. People strong in adjustment are
characterized as being good under pressure, having self-control, being calm and positive.
Therefore, Adjustment is on a continuum between being emotionally stable and unstable.
Stable refers to self-control, being calm—good under pressure, relaxed, secure, and positive-
praising others; unstable (also called neuroticism) is out of control i.e. poor under pressure,
nervous, insecure, negative, and hostile i.e. criticizing others (Lussier and Achua 2010:35).
Persons with Adjustment Personality has Stability trait of Leadership. Stable leaders are
emotionally in control of themselves. They don’t let their anger have negative outcomes (ibid:
38).
