Reflection

The student learned through creating three projects in their ENC2135 class that every creative decision made by an author or creator, even small details, helps shape the overall work. For their third project, the student realized how important decision making and attention to detail were for composing artifacts. The student had to consider appropriate genres, rhetorical strategies, and elements to best communicate their intended message and audience. Creating artifacts from the perspective of the author opened the student's eyes to the creative process. The projects helped the student become a better writer and understand genres and rhetorical devices.

My biggest takeaway from the creation of writing pieces and artifacts throughout the

completion of the three projects in this class is how writer’s/creator’s decisions, even for little

details, are critical to the shaping of overall creations. It has taught me how every decision in the

creative process has intent behind it. I found this out through my own analysis of writing pieces

and sources, but I also found it out through my own creation of artifacts and writing pieces.

While I was creating my artifacts for Project 3 in particular, I learned how important

decision-making and attention to detail are to composing pieces. For example, I found it easy to

come up with general ideas for what I wanted to do for each of my artifacts, but actually

composing them required a lot more thought in regard to rhetorical strategies and genres. I had to

think of whether or not the genre selected was appropriate and effective for my intended

audience. When creating the artifacts themselves, I had to select certain rhetorical strategies and

elements that I thought would best communicate my campaign’s purpose and fit my intention.

Having to view writing pieces and artifacts from the perspective of the composer instead of the

reader/viewer has opened my eyes to the creative process and detail behind an effective

composition.

This has ultimately helped me become a better writer and have a better grasp on the

concepts of genres and rhetorical devices themselves. Project 1 was most helpful in allowing me

to learn how to properly cite and analyze sources. Project 2 allowed me to better understand the

rhetorical devices present in these sources, such as what they are and why the composer chose to
use them. Project 3 was the most helpful in applying the two of these experiences to the creation

of my own artifacts.

I now have a better understanding of appropriate choices for composition. For example, I

had to consider whether or not my tone of voice and register would be appropriate for the

teenage demographic I had selected for my project 3 campaign. I had to consider if the setting in

the videos and the visual aspects of the TikToks, as well as the choice to use TikTok itself, was

most appropriate for this age group and topic. At first, I considered creating written blog posts as

all of my artifacts, but I realized that this genre wouldn’t be most appropriate for my

demographic since they wouldn’t be likely to interact with blog posts online and mainly use

social media. I also took it a step further and analyzed what would be most effective, not just

appropriate. I thought to myself that an emotional approach would be best when talking about the

purpose of my project 3 campaign because I recognized the relationship between the topic at

hand (health and eating disorders) and its emotional nature, so therefore an emotional rhetorical

strategy would be most effective.

I am very thankful for the many different writing and analysis skills that this course has

taught me. I feel as though I have developed as a consumer and as a composer. Now, I feel as

though I can more thoughtfully interact with texts and artifacts as well as compose thoughtful

pieces of my own.
