effectiveness of two natural ingredients, Citrus limon (lemon) and Aloe vera, in creating a potent hand
sanitizer. The setup involved gathering fresh lemons and Aloe vera plants, extracting their essential
oils or juices, and combining them with other necessary ingredients such as, Tea Tree Oil, Xanthan
Gum or Cornstarch, Distilled Water and glycerin. Our objective was to visually capture the process of
creating a hand sanitizer that harnesses the potential antimicrobial properties of these natural
ingredients, potentially providing a safer, chemical-free alternative to commercial hand sanitizers.
Stage 1
Determining the research problem:
In this experimental study titled 'The Potency of Lemon (Citrus Limon) and Aloe Vera as Hand
Sanitizer,' our research problem centers on assessing the effectiveness and attributes of natural
ingredients, Lemon (Citrus Limon) and Aloe Vera, as potential alternatives to conventional hand
sanitizers. Specifically, we seek to understand how the unique properties of these natural
components contribute to their efficacy in hand sanitization, compare their performance against
commercial products in terms of antimicrobial capabilities, user preference, and environmental
impact, thus addressing critical questions surrounding their viability as safe and sustainable options
for hand hygiene.
Stage 2
Gathering of Materials:
The research project on the efficacy of an alternative hand sanitizer formula gathered essential
ingredients, including Lemon and Aloe Vera. The lemon were used in this research can be acquired
in the various fruits store in the sampol market, while Aloe Vera gel was sourced from members
cultivating Aloe Vera plants. These ingredients underwent meticulous extraction processes to obtain
their beneficial components. In addition to these natural elements, the researchers incorporated Tea
Tree Oil for its potent antimicrobial properties. Glycerin, essential for skin hydration, was thoughtfully
included, and Xanthan Gum was used as a thickener to achieve the desired gel-like consistency.
Distilled water was skillfully employed to dilute the mixture appropriately. Notably, isopropyl alcohol,
an integral component of conventional sanitizers, was thoughtfully omitted in this alcohol-free
formulation. All necessary containers, equipment, and tools were thoughtfully provided by the
research team, while glycerin and containers were procured from a local pharmacy and the online
store Shopee, while the equipment and tools were also provided by the researchers.
Stage 3
Preparation of Set-ups:
The preparation set-ups for our experiment involve carefully arranging and organizing all the
necessary materials, ingredients, and equipment before commencing our research. This crucial
phase ensures that we have everything ready and in place for a smooth and efficient experimentation
process.
Making Set-ups:
The making set-ups phase entails the hands-on creation of our experimental setups based on the
established procedures and protocols. During this stage, we meticulously assemble, combine, and
process the ingredients and components to construct our experimental setups, following precise
guidelines to achieve accurate and reliable results.
Running Experiment:
At present, our experiment is in progress, with the carefully prepared setups and meticulously
collected data actively undergoing analysis and observation. Our research team is diligently
monitoring various parameters, conducting measurements, and recording observations to ensure the
experiment's accuracy and reliability. We are excited to observe the outcomes and draw meaningful
conclusions from the ongoing experiment, which promises to contribute valuable insights to our study.
Stage 4
Testing of Produced hand sanitizer:
After the production of anti-bacterial hand sanitizer in different set-ups, our research will test its
efficiency and effectiveness through observation. Our researchers will test the produced hand
sanitizer using the Moldy Bread Experiment, where the bread is being touched with the produced
product to see if the bread will have mold after a few days. We prepared fresh bread for each set-up.
For the experiment, we placed three different slices of bread for each set-up in separate baggies.
One bread slice was put in the baggie untouched or being a control, one was touched with dirty
hands, and the other one was touched by the researcher who used hand sanitizer. We observed the
bread forming mold on each set-up after a few days. After this process, we will now come up with a
conclusion.
Data Gathering:
During the experimentation process, the researchers recorded data and their observation. The
recording methods are in the form of a video and picture. On the other hand, after the
experimentation, they gathered all need and necessary data that has benefit the project.
Conclusion:
The experiment demonstrated that the hand sanitizer formulated with Citrus Limon (lemon) and Aloe
Vera exhibited notable effectiveness in inhibiting mold growth on bread slices, comparable to
conventional hand sanitizers. This suggests that the natural ingredients in the sanitizer may possess
antimicrobial properties suitable for hand hygiene. Further research and testing may be warranted to
validate these findings and explore the potential benefits of this chemical-free alternative hand
sanitizer.
