Bihar Museum, Patna

Location : Jawaharlal Nehru Marg, Patna, Bihar Site Area : 54,000 m2

Built-up-Area : 23,600 m2 Typology : Commercial building

Energy Consumption Reduction : 53% reduction in energy consumption compared to GRIHA

benchmark

EPI : 66.18 kWh/m2 /year

GRIHA provisional rating : 5 Star Rating (Version 3.1)

Year of completion : 2018

Integrated Design Team:

Client : Bihar Construction Department

Principal Architect : Opolis Architects + Maki and Associates

Landscape Architect : Forethought Consultants

Structural Consultant : Mahendra Raj Consultants

MEP Consultant : Design Bureau

Green Building Design and Certification : Environmental Design Solutions

The following strategies were adopted to reduce the building impact on the natural
environment:

Þ Sustainable Site Planning:

• Out of 423 existing mature trees, 165 mature trees were preserved and in addition
compensatory plantation of

774 trees was done on site.

• Site was screened with 3m high barricading; wheel washing facility was provided for vehicles
entering the site

and water was sprinkled on site to control dust pollution.

• 1,680m3 top soil was preserved within the site and reused for landscaping.

Þ Water Management:

• Reduction of 60.5% from the GRIHA base case has been demonstrated in building water
demand by installing

water efficient fixtures.

• Reduction of 62.5 % from the GRIHA base case has been demonstrated in the landscape
water demand.

• Gunny bags/hessian cloth were used for curing of columns and ponding technique was used
for curing of slabs.
Þ Energy Optimization & Occupant Comfort:

• For achieving visual comfort:

» More than 25% of the total living area is day-lit and meets the daylight factor as prescribed by
NBC 2005.

» 100% of the outdoor lights have been connected with automatic switches.

• For achieving thermal comfort:

» EPI reduction of 52.13% from the GRIHA base case has been demonstrated through the
integration of highperformance systems.

» Water cooled scroll chiller with COP of 6.16 have been installed which complies with ECBC.
Þ Renewable Energy Technology installed on Site:

• Solar Photovoltaic system of capacity 10kWp and proposed capacity is 220kWp is installed on-
site in the project

for complying with the mandatory clause.

Þ Sustainable Building Materials:

• Flyash bricks with 60% fly ash content by volume have been used in the project.

• Kota stone, sandstone, rubber tile, carpet and vitrified tiles were used as a flooring material in
the building.

LEADERSHIP IN ENERGY & ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN (LEED)
LEED is a rating system sanctioned by the Indian Green BuildingCouncil (IGBC). It is a voluntary,
consensus – based, market-driven building rating system based on existing proven technology.
It evaluatesenvironmental performance from a whole building perspective over a building's life
cycle, providing a definitive standard for whatconstitutes a ‘Green Building'.

What is a Green Building?

A Building which promotes energy conservation, encourages optimum use of resources, and
mitigates negative impact onenvironment and people is known as a Green Building. What is the
need for Green Buildings?Green Building is an ideal solution to address the booming
construction industry in India and an opportunity to capitalize on ourtropical climate. Due to
our natural climate, we have abundance of natural heat and light.

The main focus of the design is the inverted cone, the tip of which symbolizes the seedof this
software world which grows both horizontally and vertically. The dynamicflower symbolizes the
growth of technology. In the interior of the cone, are the meetingrooms, conference rooms,
training rooms and cafeteria which are a link between theoutside and inside world. People
meet in these areas, and exchange ideas andinformation. With this cone as the centre (seed),
there originate various axes whichsymbolize the ideas and thoughts radiating into action. The
main circulation spines bothhorizontal and vertical, originate from this dynamic public realm

Wipro Technologies, Gurgaon facility was awarded 57 out of 69 GREEN points. This building
contains rain watercollection system, double heat insulation, use of re-cycled materials and
solar energy. Also most importantly, asignificant factor in optimizing energy costs was
Intelligent Lighting design and efficient Lighting Controls. The task was to create an environment
friendly, energy efficient and reliable lighting system, that delivered perfectvisual ambience and
also could adapt to the users’ changing needs. To create an exemplary energy-efficient building,
high performance glass with optimum visual light transmission;light shelves and overhangs for
all windows, efficient lighting using FTL (T5) lamps and ample day-lit spaces with photo sensor
controls, were used.Light efficiency has been achieved with the help of following initiatives –

-Reduced depth of building for increased daylight

-Lower floors have bigger windows for better light penetration

-Recessed glazing on higher floors for shade

-Light coloured walls in courtyard for diffused reflected light

LIGHTING CONTROLS
Daylight was an important factor to be considered while doing the lighting design. Light output
was regulated usingLighting Controls that nicely followed the daylight through the course of the
day, adjusting subtly to its changes. Theenergy simulation tool estimates savings in electricity
when natural light is available sufficiently for performinginterior tasks.

All open office spaces look into the courtyard. As a result these spaces have good access to
daylight. Lightshelves have been provided for maximum penetration of daylight. Along with
daylight, luminaires were alsocontrolled by Wipro occupancy sensors, which detected presence
and switched on /off the luminaires avoiding alot of energy wastage.
HIGH EFFICIENCY LUMINAIRES and CONTROL GEAR

Individual requirements were largely considered while planning the ambient as well as task
light for theworkspaces. High efficiency luminaires from the Wipro Brightness Management
portfolio were selected thataided in optimizing energy utility and their features ensured
uniform illumination, creating a soothing glare-freeatmosphere at the same time. These
luminaires were used along with APF Ballast, that ensured Power Factorcorrection and constant
light output, in addition to high energy savings.Exterior lighting was mostly limited to functional
requirements and less of decorative effects. The luminaireswere selected after thoroughly
evaluating the quality standards, light distribution and ingress protection. At the end of it, Wipro
Gurgaon facility truly stands to be a winner.
