(3) Engine contol swatch, (4) Emergency stop push button, Remote Control Panel (Status) 4 ~~ Systems OperationThe Remote Control Panel (Status) contains the Engine Status Control Module (SCM), an Emergency Stop Push Button (ESPB) and an Engine Control Switch (ECS). ‘The Engine Status Control Module (SCM) is used to ‘monitor engine parameters (oil pressure, coolant temperature, engine overspeed and over cranking of the starting motor), provides an engine protection system (two stage shutdown) and controls normal start/stop functions, ‘An Emergency Stop Push Button (ESPB) is located on the remote control panel. When this button is pressed, the fuel is shut off and the engine ignition is turned off. Function Of Controls The Emergency Stop Push Button (ESPB) (4). When this button is pressed, the gas shut-off valve is de ‘energized which stops the fuel supply to the engine. At the same time a relay is energized to turn the ignition ff (the ground to the shutdown switch of the Electronic Ignition System control is opened). NOTICE ‘The Emergency Stop Push Button (ESPB) is not to be used for normal engine shut down. To avoid possible engine damage, use the Engine Control Switch (ECS) for normal engine shut down NOTICE ‘The Emergency Stop Push Button (ESPB) is not to be used for normal engine shutdown. To avoid possible engine damage, use the Engine Control Switch (ECS) for normal engine shutdown, The Engine Control Switch (ECS) has four positions “Oft/Reset, Auto, Manual/Start and Cooldowny/Stop" ‘Components On The Back Of SCM (4) (6) Fuses (F1 though F6). (6) Switch (overspeed verity), Remote Control Panel (Status) To restart the engine, the emergency stop push button (ESPB) must be turned unti it pops out. Above the ‘emergency stop push button is the Engine Control Switch (ECS) (3) ‘The ECS determines the status of the remote control panel, In the automatic position (3 o'clock), the engine will start automatically whenever the remote initiating contact ((C) (optional) is closed. The engine will also shut down after the initiate contacts open. An adjustable cool down time can be programmed to give ‘a 0 to 30 minute cool down period before the engine shuts down. In the manual/start position (6 o'clock), the engine will start and run as long as the ECS is in this position. In the cooldown/stop position (9 o'clock), the fuel solenoid shuts the engine down after cool down. In the off/reset position (12 o'clock), the fault lights are reset and engine shuts down immediately. The power will be removed from the SCM and EIS as soon as the engine is shut down. Engine Status Control Module The bottom of the remote control panel contains the Status Control Module. This displays fault conditions and key engine parameters The Engine Status Control Module (SCM) accepts information from the operator, magnetic speed pickup (MPU), pressure/temperature module and the Electronic Ignition System control. This information is sed to determine the “on/off” state of the engine's fuel and ignition system. ‘Systems Operation[Prows s eee & cos10P1 Engine Status Control Module (SOM) {i}bispay LCD. 2) Swen (play hold switch) (2) Overcrak LD. (€)Low oi pressure LED. (5) Overspeed LED. (6) Emergency Sop LED. (High coolant temperature LED, (8) Auxiiary shutdown, In the very basic operating conditions, the SCM receives a signal to run the engine. The SCM then turns on the engine's fuel and starting motor. When the engine speed reaches the crank termination speed, the starting motor is disengaged. When the SCM receives a signal to stop the engine, it shuts the fue! off The SCM has the following features: Cycle Crank - The SCM can be programmed to crank- rest-crank for adjustable time periods (see Service Procedure A for adjusting). 2301A Speed Control - When the engine oil pressure inereases past the low oll pressure set point, the SCM will indicate to a 2301A Speed Control that it should increase the engine speed from idle to rated. Cooldown - Upon receiving a signal to perform a normal shut down, the SCM will wait a preprogrammed ‘amount of time before shutting the engine off by ‘means of the gas shut-off valve. ‘Automatic Operation - While in the automatic mode, the SCM can be started by a remote initiate signal [when initiate contact (IC) closes). Upon loss of the: signal, the SCM will perform a normal shut down, ‘Alarm Module Communication - The SCM can transmit fault and alarm conditions to an alarm module. Remote Control Panel (Status) Power Down - The Remote Control Panel (Status) system is designed to remove power from the SCM and EIS when in the off/reset mode. The SCM will not allow the power down unti the Crank Termination Relay and the Fue! Control Relay are both “of (both relays tum off two seconds after zero rpm) Fuel Solenoid Type - The SCM can be programmed to work with either an Energize To Fun (ETA) fuel system or an Energize To Shutdown (ETS) fuel system. LED Display - Six LEDs are located on front of the SCM to annunciale overcrank shutdown, overspeed shutdown, low oll pressure shutdown, high coolant ‘temperature shutdown, emergency stop and auxiliary shutdown. Emergency Stop -If the SCM detects an emergency stop, the engine will shut down by means of ignition ‘and fuel control, LED (6) wil flash. Pressure/Temperature Module Malfunction - i the signal from the engine mounted oil pressure/lemperature transducer module is lost or unreadable, the engine will be shut down by means of the fuel control and a diagnostic code will be displayed, The SCM can be programmed to ignore the transducer module malfunction. ‘Speed Pickup Malfunction - If the SCM loses its ‘magnetic pickup signal, the engine will be shut down bby means of the ignition system and fuel control and a diagnostic code will be displayed. Overcrank Protection - If the engine fais to startin a preprogrammed amount of time, the SCM will halt the starting sequence and flash an LED (3). Another attempt at starting the engine cannot be made without first going into the off/reset position on the ECS. Liquid Crystal Display (1) - Service hours, engine speed, system battery voltage, engine oil pressure and engine coolant temperature are sequentially displayed in either English or metric units. Pressing switch (2) on the front of the SCM will cause the display to lock. (stop) on one of the engine parameters. Pressing the switch again will resume the display to normal sequencing, When a fault signal is detected, the display is alsa used to indicate diagnostic codes, to aid in troubleshooting, In the Troubleshooting Section, see Diagnosed Problems, NOTE: All diagnostic lights should turn on briefly when the panel is powered up. This is a lamp test. COverspeed Protection - If the engine speed exceeds the overspeed set point, it will be shut down by means of ignition and fuel control, LED (6) will ash. The overspeed set point is lowered to 75 percent of its original value while the overspeed verify switch is depressed. This wil allow the overspeed circuit to be tested while the engine is operating at rated speed. See Service Procedure G for testing ‘Systems OperationLow Oil Pressure Protection - I the engine oil pressure drops below the low oil pressure set point, it will be shut down by means of the fuel control LED (4) will flash, There are two low oll pressure set points, one for when the engine speed is below the oll step speed and another for when the engine speed is above the oil step speed. See Service Procedure | for testing High Coolant Temperature Protection - if the engine coolant temperature exceeds the high coolant temperature set point, the engine will shut down by means of the fuel control. Led (7) will lash. See Service Procedure H for testing NOTE: For all fault conditions, if the fuel control fails to shut down the engine, the ignition system is shut off five seconds after the fault occurs. Sequence Of Operation The Engine Control Switch (ECS) of the remote control panel has four positions ~ “AUTO, MANUAL/START, COOLDOWN/STOP, OFF/RESET”. If the ECS is in the “AUTO™ postion and a signal to run is received from a remote inate contact ((), or the ECS is placed in the “"MANUAL/START” position, the engine will crank, terminate cranking and run. The engine may cycle crank if the cycle crank feature is utlized. Engines ‘equipped with electronic governers wil run at iow ike speed unt lube ol pressure has exceeded the idle low ‘ol pressure sot point, then the 2301A Speed Control relay contact ofthe SCM wil close and the engine will ‘accelerate to rated speed. Engines with hycra mechanical governors will accelerate to their speed setting immediately after crank termination. The engine will run unt the signal to run is removed by either turning the Engine Control Switch (ECS) to *COOLDOWN)STOP*, ‘OFF /RESET, or opening the remote initiate contact with the ECS in the “AUTO” position. Once the ECS is moved to the SCOOLDOWN/STOP" positon, or ifin the “Auto” postion and the remote inate contact opens, the fengine wil rn fora short period of time in the cool down mode, if the cool down feature was utilized. If the ‘cool down feature was not utiized the engine will shut down immediately. The engine is then capable of immediate restart Remote Control Panel (Status) ‘Sequence Of Operation (Normal Start-Stop) Upon receipt of a signal to start, the SCM will check to assure that: a. An emergency stop signal is not present. b. All faults have been reset, . All sensors are connected and operating properly 4d. No abnormal engine control switch signals are present @. The engine is not already running, f. The SCM microprocessor is functioning» properly. g. The SCM is not in the programming mode The SCM will not allow the start sequence to begin and wil splay the proper diagnostic code when applicable, it an above fault condition exists. However, once the SCM is satisfied that conditions are norma, it will energize the Starting Motor Relay (SMR) and Run Felay (RR). The SCM wil also signal for fuel (or the 2301 Speed Contro)) to be turned on by energizing the Fuel Control Relay (FCR) and Run Relay (RR). If the ‘cycle crank feature is enabled, the SCM will ‘automatically crank-rest-crank the engine for adjustable time periods. the engine fails to start within the selected total crank time, the SCM will execute an ‘overcrank fault. fa fauit condition occurs while the engine is cranking, the SCM will terminate and lock out cranking and cisplay the applicable diagnostic code, or light the appropriate LED. After the engine starts and has achieved the proper crank termination speed, the SCM will de-energize the starting motor by de-eneraizing SMR and will energize the Crank Termination Relay (CTR). Once the correct low ile oll pressure is achieved, the SCM will signal for the optional 2301 Speed Control to accelerate the generator set to rated speed, by energizing the 2301A relay, The engine will un as long as operating conditions remain normal and a signal to run is being received by the SCM, The SCM will sequentially display (each for a two second period) the engine oil pressure, coolant temperature, rpm, service hours, and system DC volts; by means of the digital display prior to or while the. engine is operating; as well as monitor for any fault or abnormal conditions that may occur. ‘Systems OperationUpon loss of the run signal, the engine wall continue to run for an adjustable cool down period ifthe cool down feature is utlized. However, if the cool down feature is nat used ori the SCM receives an off/reset signal, it wil immediately de-energize the Run Relay. The fuel Circuitry wil be de-energized for energized to run (ETR) Iype (ot 2301A) systems. For energized to shut off (ETS) type systems, the fuel circuit is energized at this point. I the signal fo run returns before the engine stops, the SCM will immediately go back to the running slato, (je, fuel will be turned back on, but the starting ‘motor will not energize). However, i restart does not ‘occur and rpm continues to drop. the SCM wil initiate cranking upon reaching zero rpm. Assuming that the run signal does not return and the engine speed continues to diminish until zero rpm is reached, the Crank Termination Relay (CTR) will be de-energized and the SCM wil be ready for an instant restart. The Fuel Control Relay wil be ready for an instant restart. ‘The Fuel Control Relay (FCR) of the SCM will de energize two seconds ater zero rpm. Sequence Of Operation (Fault Conditions) Ita fault condition occurs prior to starting the engine, the SCM wil: a, De-onergize and lock out the starting motor circuit 'b. Assure that fuel is shut off . De-energize the Run Relay Circuit. d. Energize the fault shutdown circuitry, Engine Failure Relay (ENFR), Ifa fault condition occurs while the engine is running, the SCM will respond as follows: . Fuel control circuitry wil be: ‘*De-energized for energized to run engines, ‘Energized for energized to shutdown engines, and then de-energized two seconds atter the engine reaches zero pm. f. Ignition Shutoff Relay (ISR) will be de-eneraized, for an overspeed, emergency stop, oF diagnostic codes 01, 04, 06 or if all six LED's are on. The ISR will also de-energize if the engine has not shut down within five seconds after the FCR commanded it to do so as a result of a fault condition. The ISR circuitry shall be re: energized 10 to 15 seconds after the engine reaches zero rpm. The ISR shuts of the ignition system, 4g. The Starting Motor Relay (SMA) circuitry shall be locked in the de-energized state. hy, The Run Relay (RR) circuitry shall be de- energized, i. The Fault Shutdown Circuitry shall be energized, including the Engine Failure Relay (ENFR). Ifa fault ocours before or atter the engine starts, the appropriate fault indicating LED shall flash at two Hz or a diagnostic code shall be displayed to indicate the rrature of the problem. The indicators shall remain on and the SCM shall remain in the fault mode unti it receives a reset signal Pressure/Temperature Module The pressute/temperature module receives engine coolant temperature and engine oil pressure information, The pressure/temperature module then sends engine coolant and engine oil pressure information to the SCM. , Nose cotse0r1 Current Pressure/Temperature Module (3) Connecter to SCM, (2) Connectors to coolant temperature sensor. (8) Connector to engine ol pressure sensor, On the pressure/teriperature modules, the engine oil pressure transducer is NOT mounted within the module, Wires connect the module to the engine cil pressure sensor. The engine oil pressure sensor contains the transducer and mounts to the engine. Wires also connect the module to the engine coolant temperature sensor and the SCM. Remote Control Panel (Status) a 12 ‘Systems OperationTroubleshooting Introduction (On the pages that follow are two lists of possible problems, Diagnosed Problems List and Undiagnosed Problems List. Before checking the list of problems, check the SCM display for any diagnostic codes. These codes aid in finding the problem (see Diagnosed Problems List), Before replacing anything, inspect all control, ‘component and hamess connections. Loose ‘connections could cause electrical problems. Make sure the connections are tight before testing continues. Identify your particular type of problem from the Problem List, then go directly to that problem procedure, However, when you begin the procedure for that problem, start at Step 1 and follow through the step by step procedure. The steps in a particular problem provide a definite sequence to be followed for 2 logical, one by one elimination of many variables. ‘These steps are arranged in order from the more probable/easiest to check, to the less probable/more complex to check When the cause of the problem is found and corrected, stop the test. Do net continue through the complete procedure just because itis there, Test Instruments Caterpillar Digital Multimeter (6V7070) ~ can be used for many of the voltage and resistance checks. Rectifiers can also be cheoked with the special diode function, For further information on using the digital multimeter, see Special instruction, Form SEHS7734. Remote Control Panel (Status) Diagnosed Problems Diagnostic codes are displayed on the same display as the service hours, engine speed, battery voltage, ‘engine oll pressure, and engine coolant temperature. ‘When a diagnostic code is displayed, the arrow that indicates which of the above parameters are displayed will be missing and a flashing “dIAG will be displayed, If several faults are present, the diagnostic codes will be displayed in sequence. The diagnostic code can be cleared from the display by turning the Engine Control Switch (ECS) to the OFF/RESET position. Before. attempting a repair, move the ECS to the OFF/RESET position and restart engine to see if problem recurs, Diagnosed Problems List 4. SCM Display = 01 dIAG, no magnetic speed pickup (speed sensor) signal. 2. SCM Display = 02 IAG, no oil pressure/temperature sensor (transducer) signal 3.
