QUESTION ANSWERS

1. What remains to be the ‘distant goal’?

The goal of providing access to quality education, which is a minimum necessary condition for
any progress towards making India a knowledge society remains a distant goal.

2. What is the main factor affecting the quality of education?

The main factor affecting the quality of education in India is the lack of qualified teachers in
schools. Not only that but hiring teachers on a contract paying a pittance of a salary is also a
reason leading to low-quality education.

3. Why do leading colleges hold their individual admission tests?

Leading colleges held their tests because they don’t find higher secondary school results
reliable to judge students calibre as these days a lot of students secure 90% or more.

4. What is the problem with the CBSE examination results?

The number of students scoring 90%or more is increasing every year, this raises the question of
the quality of answers. It seems the standards of CBSE has been diluted, even bigger
educational institutions do not rely on its results.

SUMMARY

QUALITY OF HIGH SCHOOL EDUCATION

In 2006 report by National Knowledge Commission (NKC) states that despite some greater learning institutions
it is hard for India to realise its knowledge power and also providing access to quality education remains a
distant goal. Yet there is no legislation to affirm the right to education. The number of buildings for education
purposes falls short and so does qualified teachers due to the pittance of a salary leading to a compromise in
the quality of education. we have NCERT to bring out books for school education and CBSE for conducting
examinations. The states too have a board to conduct examinations but some states are lenient in marking.
A lot of students secure above 90% in CBSE, arising questions on its standards. Leading undergraduate
colleges hold their admissions tests because HSC results are not reliable to judge students potential. The
number of students scoring more marks seems to be every year. There's a big difference between what
students learn and what they face in colleges that standards applied by HSC boards seem to have been
diluted and the teacher shops take benefit of this situation. NCERT had recently commissioned experts to
rewrite textbooks, not flawless but the book introduces basic concepts to beginners. This new introduction is
facing roadblocks as teachers do not like to adopt books they are not familiar and also teacher shops fear the
loss of business.

ESSAY
School Education in Rural Areas of our Country: Problems and Prospects

India, a country of youths, where 65% of its residents live in a rural area, we need to talk to discuss its rural
education. Most of the time rural learners and their educations remain neglected, it's time we give it the
attention it deserves especially when it is ploughed with so many problems like poor infrastructure, quality of
education, absence of teachers, poverty etc.

Most of the students go to Government schools because of no private schools present or because of lack of
funds. What makes a school, school is its teachers, but this is what rural schools lack. Most of the time
government hire teacher temporarily to save on hefty paying salary, which leads to instability for students. Not
only that but because of this teachers stays dissatisfied and do not give their 100% towards students learning,
affecting the quality of education. Absetiseem or giving non-teaching duties like elections to the teacher is also
the reason why rural students education suffer. Many a time there is only one teacher for the whole school and
if he's absent then its a holiday or there are very few teachers allocated to large number students, because of
this distorted teacher-student ratio neither students nor teacher takes interest in studies.

The government needs to hire teachers on a parament basis. To keep a check on teachers absenteeism and
lack of enthusiasm there should be surprise school inspections. To ensure quality education for our rural
learner's government should provide Teacher Training Program to every rural teacher.

Now, we should stop avoiding challenges faced by rural education and try solving them. Education is a broad
aspect and the problem relating to it won't be solved in one day but the everyday effort can solve the problem
one day.
