Lift Plan Requirements

The document outlines safety requirements and procedures for lifting operations, including obtaining a permit for lifts over 5 tons or that pose specific risks, following an 8 step process for rigging that ensures load stability, and guidelines for tandem lifts using multiple cranes simultaneously which require detailed planning and coordination. Proper personal protective equipment, barricading of work areas, qualified operators and signal persons are required to complete lifts safely.

Lifting Plan

ALL Material Handling Activities

Require Lifting Plan, Except Manual
Handling & Material Handling By
Use Of Fork Lift And Stacker
Permit To Work- Lifting operation
For following Lifting operations, PTW shall be required :-
 Lifting of load having weight 5 Ton or more

 Non routine operation carried out with a mobile lifting equipment

 Operation carried out with a temporary lifting equipment

 Operation with load tilting

 Operation needing to use several lifting equipments at the same time

 Operation where operator can not see the load

 Operation needing assistants to guide the load during the load setting

 Lift of load without any defined hooking points 3

 Use of equipment not specifically designed for lifting (e.g. backhoe

excavator)

 lifting nearby (or over) existing buildings or hazardous installations

(e.g. gas equipments, high - voltage line)

 Operation of lifting equipment >75 % of weight capacity for

lifting equipment or crane

 Using of specifically designed equipment for a specific lifting operation

 Unconfirmed knowledge of center of gravity

 Lifting of bundles (e.g. load of pipes) 4

EIGHT BASIC STEPS FOR SAFE
RIGGING

5
 STEP: 1
 Know the detail of the job from
 the drawing.
a) Identify Size, Shape and Weight of

 the load, that is to be Lifted.

b) Identify all External Dimensions.

c) Indentify the C.G point of the load.

d) Locate the load lifting points.

STEP: 2

Know the path

& Placement
of the Load.

a) Place from where it will be lifted.

b) Place where it will be placed.
c) Where lifting crane(s) will be
located?
 STEP: 3
 Select the lifting
 machine with
 reference to
 load.
 a) Load and site factors,
 b) Where it will be located and
 c) What site preparations will be
required.
STEP: 4

 Select the packing materials to protect

rigging hardware from the edge of load.
 Make a attachment methods of rigging
hardware.
 The plan will include any environmental
lifting conditions.
STEP: 5

 Preparation of load lifting plan as a

drawing on AUTO-CAD.
 A documented plan will designate the lift
supervisor, crane operator, rigger and state
their qualifications.
STEP: 6
 Always Prepare the landing site.

 Lift the load from “A” and unload at “B” using

the correct hand signals.

 Do not travel the load over people.

HAND SIGNALS
 The Person performing the signals must be positioned where the
load can be plainly seen, and is in clear sight of the crane operator.
 Some Organizations require audio communication anytime the
load is out of sight of the operator, or the signalperson is over 100
feet from the operator.
 The crane operator must only respond to the signals from the
designated person, other than a stop signal from any crewmember.
 The operator and the person performing the signals must agree
prior to the lift on any necessary signals that are not included
among the standard hand signals.
INSTRUCTIONS TO SIGNAL PERSONS
(1) Only one person to be signalperson.

(2) Make sure the operator can see you and acknowledges the signal

given

(3) Signalperson must watch the load – the operator is watching you

(4) Don’t swing the load over other workers; warm them to keep out

of the way

STEP: 7
 Remove the lifting tools & tackles and Secure
the Load.

STEP: 8
 Clear site.
 Clean the lifting tackles and check it.
 Store the lifting tackle on racks correctly.
Tandem Lift :
Any lift involving more than 2 cranes is a Tandem or
Critical Lift. Tandem Lifts are complex and dangerous as
crane capacities are based on freely suspended and
balanced load. The use of two, often more cranes, May
introduce side loading of the boom not normally
encountered with one crane. The load must be divided as
planned and the rigging so arranged.
Requirements of a Tandem Lift :
1) The ground must be levelled & compacted (especially so if one or
more the cranes must travel with the load).
2) The load and crane position during the lift must be determined.(so
that load calculation can be done).
 The net load weight must be calculated, after the crane
types have been selected, the gross weight of the load can be
worked out, including the crane hook blocks and rigging
components.
3) All cranes must have their capacity calculated for the lift. None
of the cranes should have more than a 75 % load.
4) If different crane models are used, the operators will have to
match the line, boom and swing speed.
5) All swing and boom motions , and crane travel must be kept to
a minimum.
(An equaliser beam is recommended if hoist line speeds are
difficult to match ).
6) Operators, riggers and signalpersons must know exactly what
the entire operation is, step by step.
7) At least one dry run should be mode. All
communication should be made by radio.
8) There must be one person co-ordinating the lift.
9) The operators must maintain jerk-free movements. Hoisting,
booming, or swinging requires smooth start and stops.
10)All cranes on a multi-crane lift must lift the load off the
ground simultaneously. If not, one of the cranes will be
overloaded.
TANDEM LIFT (Unequal Loading)
1)When two cranes lift a load
determination must be made on the
location of the lift points for each crane.
 This must be calculated to properly distribute the load
according to the capacities of each crane.
2) If load is non-symmetrical as in
illustration, the center of gravity will be
closer to one end.
 Therefore it is likely that one crane will be positioned to lift
over half of the load weight.
