ENGINE FABRICATION INSTRUCTIONS - CONVERSION OF ENGINE T53-L-13B SERIAL NUMBER

LE18636 SUFFIX B TO THE T53-L-703 CONFIGURATION

1. Planning Information

A. Effectivity

These instructions are for modifying engine model T53-L-13B configuration Part No. 1-000-060-
22 to the T53-L-703 configuration Part No. 1-000-060-23, serial number LE18636 Suffix B.
These instructions do not apply to any other serial number engines without express written
consent from Honeywell Aerospace.

B. Purpose

To provide modification, rework, and installation instructions for the improved hardware
required to modify the T53-L-13B engine, serial number LE18636 Suffix B, to the T53-L-703
configuration.

C. Service Bulletins

All T53-L-703 service bulletins not previously incorporated must be performed during the

This EFI has been issued to allow Airborne Engines Limited of Delta, BC Canada, to convert

engine model T53-L-13B, serial number LE18636 Suffix B, to the T53-L-703 configuration.
This is an overhaul/conversion, TSN 2387.2 hours / TSO 0.0 Hrs with 5000 hr. TBO.

2. Accomplishment Instructions

A. Disassemble the gas turbine engine, as necessary, for overhaul of engine. Clean and inspect
all of the parts to be used again. Refer to the applicable manual(s) referenced in paragraph
1.F.

B. Perform all erosion inspections identified in Overhaul Manual 290.3, 72-30-01, 72-30-02, and
72-30-03. No deviations will be approved on the following Overhaul Manual requirements:

(1) First stage compressor blades - no visible loss of material allowed. (Refer to Overhaul
Manual 290.3, 72-30-03.)

(2) Second through fifth stage compressor blades - chord tip erosion limit shall be in
accordance with manual limits. (Refer to Overhaul Manual 290.3, 72-30-03.)

(3) Vane erosion, replace if width of vane is less than:

(a) First stage - 0.665 inch

(b) Second through fourth stages - 0.647 inch

(c) Exit vane - 0.466 inch

(4) Impeller wear gap 0.040 inch maximum. (Refer to Overhaul Manual 290.3,
72-30-03.)

C. Rework the gas turbine engine parts, if applicable, with the subsequent instructions besides the
appropriate sections from Overhaul Manual.

(1) If SB T53-L-13B-0108 has not been accomplished, replace Centrifugal Impeller Part No.
1-100-078-07 with Centrifugal Impeller Part No. 1-100-078-13 or 1-100-078-14.

(2) Accomplish SB T53-L-703-0125 to ensure appropriate life cycle count for the

Install Shaft Front, Compressor Rotor Part No. 1-100-495-07.

Install Rotor Compressor Assembly Part No. 1-101-250-03 (Allowed per Engineering

Drawing 1-101-090-07, Note 8) and Power Shaft Assembly Part No.1-100-800-04.

(5) Perform inspection of Shaft, Rear Compressor 1-100-501-01 in accordance with SB T53-
0181 prior to installation.

(6) Ensure the Compressor Housing Assembly meets the configuration of the 1-101-520-01
and is correctly identified.
D
(a) If applicable; perform Overhaul Repair Instruction T38981.

(b) No deviations will be approved in Fits and Clearances outlined in the Overhaul
Manual for the Compressor Housing Assembly for engine model T53-L-703.
(Refer to Overhaul Manual 290.3, 72-00-00, Table 601).

(7) Install Combustion Chamber Housing Part No. 1-130-610R21 per Service Bulletins and
T53-0153R3.

(8) Inspect inner shroud of nozzle assembly and ring Part No. 1-190-050-06. If cracking is
found between the inner shroud of nozzle assembly and ring replace with a new
assembly or perform bridge weld repair per Overhaul Repair Instruction T42171. Note
list of approved suppliers to perform this operation.

(9) If Second Stage Gas Producer Nozzle Assembly Part No. 1-120-000-14 is installed;
convert to or replace with Part No. 1-120-050-06 in accordance with Service Bulletin T53-
L-703-0131. Contact Honeywell for approved conversion sources.

(10) Convert Air Diffuser Housing Part No. 1-110-230-08 to Part No. 1-110-230-15 per
Service Bulletin T53-L-703-0114 if conversion has not been accomplished already.

(11) Convert Exhaust Diffuser Assembly Part No. 1-150-240-03 to Part No. 1-150-240-06 per
Service Bulletin T53-L-703-0117.

(12) Convert Retaining Plate Part No. 1-110-181-06 to Part No. 1-110-181-10 per Service
Bulletin T53-L-703-0116.

(13) To obtain the desired results of the 5000 hour extended TBO program resulting from
implementation of this EFI document; all parts used shall be Original OEM traceable
parts as well as comply with Service Bulletin T53-0171.

(14) Ensure compliance to SB T53-L-703-0113 as applicable (Paragraph 2.C); also ensure

compliance to its concurrent requirements (Paragraph 1.B).

PROCEDURES THAT NEED GRIND/MACHINE WORK WILL CAUSE
LOOSE PARTICLES THAT CAN GET IN YOUR EYES.

NOTE: Do not break corners after grinding. Sharp corners are desired.

(a) Inspect the components of the Rotor Assembly, First Turbine Gas Producer Part
No. 1-101-100-13 to Overhaul Manual requirements. Install internally cooled

ft Blades Part No. 1-100-362-06, Disk Part No. 1-103-035-01, new Sealing Disc Part
No. 1-100-399-01 (Use of alternate part number approved after performing ORI
TXXXXX. Verify that part is re-identified and marked for use as “T53L703 only”),
new Spacer Ring Part No. 1-103-037-01 (Preferred) or Part No. 1-100-559-01

(Alternate), and Retaining Ring Part No. 1-103-120-01 (Preferred) or Part No.
1-100-890-07 (Alternate). Install blades, tip grind to maximum diameter, balance,
and inspect as outlined in the Overhaul Manual requirements. (Refer to Overhaul
Manual 290.3, 72-50-07.)

(b) When reinstalling the Disk Part No. 1-103-035-01; replace the Rear Compressor
Bearing Oil Ring with Part No. 1-103-047-01 per SB T53-L-703-0128.

(c) Use a vibropeen etching tool to re-identify the First Stage Gas Producer Turbine
Rotor Assembly to Part No. 1-101-100-13 if needed.

(15) Rework Turbine Rotor, Turbine Engine Second Stage Gas Producer Rotor Part No.
1-101-360-07.

(a) Using Disc Part No. 1-100-397-01 (Use of alternate part number approved after
performing ORI TXXXXX. Verify that part is re-identified and marked for use as
“T53L703 only”), install Blades Part No. 1-100-118-07 using Pin Part No.
1-140-285-01 and plate 1-100-144-01. Tip grind to maximum diameter. Balance
and inspect as outlined in the Overhaul Manual. (Refer to Overhaul Manual 290.3,
72-50-07.)

(16) Assemble new Disc and Spacer Assembly Part No. 1-101-650-01. Assembly uses
Second Turbine Sealing Disc Part No. 1-103-039-01 and Spacer Part No. 1-103-034-02
(See Figure1).

CAUTION: INSERT LOCATING TANGS INTO THE SLOTS IN THE SPACER.

(17) Balance the spacer and sealing disc as follows:

(a) Mount spacer on Arbor Part No. LTCT206-3. Tighten bolts to a torque value of
100 pound-inches.

NOTE: If run out exceeds this value, un-torque and remove bolts, reposition
spacer on arbor and repeat steps (a) and (b).

(b) Radial run out must not exceed 0.001 inch total indicator run out (TIR).

(c) Balance the spacer and correct unbalanced conditions by removing material from
the spacer.

(d) Remaining imbalance must not exceed 0.500 gram-inches.

(18) Convert Combustion Chamber Liner Part No. 1-130-780-01 to Part No. 1-130-780-03 per
ORI P24051.

(19) Convert Combustion Chamber Deflector Assembly to Part No. 1-110-500R12 per
SB T53-0160.

(20) Convert Bearing Housing Part No. 1-140-590-04 to Part No. 1-140-590-07 per Service
Bulletin T53-L-703-0109, or replace with Part No. 1-140-590-09 or 1-140-590R10 per
Service Bulletin T53-0158.

(21) Convert Fireshield Part No. 1-150-250-02 to Part No. 1-150-250-08. Contact Honeywell
for approved conversion sources.

(22) Install replacement Fireshield Rockplates Part Nos. 1-150-137-01 and 1-150-138-01 as
applicable (Refer to Repair Manual 72-09-41, 1-300-239.).

D. Assemble the gas turbine engine. Refer to the applicable manual(s) referenced in paragraph

(1) Replace No. 1 seal with Seal Assembly Part No. 1-300-585-03.

(2) Assemble the combustion chamber assembly as outlined in the Overhaul Manual.
(Refer to Overhaul Manual 290.3, 72-40-02.) Observe the following part number
changes:

(a) Assemble using Combustion Chamber Housing Part No. 1-130-610R21.

(b) Replace Combustion Chamber Liner Part No. 1-130-780-01 with Part No.
1-130-780-03.

(c) Replace three Washers Part No. 1-130-218-03 with six Springs Part No.
1-130-278-01.

(d) Replace six Nuts Part No. AN121528 with Part No. MS9356-11.

(e) Tighten Nuts Part No. MS9356-11 to a torque value of 20 to 30 pound-inches.

Verify the proper re-identification of the Combustion Chamber Assembly to Part
No. 1-130-620-R21.

Assemble the power turbine rotor and bearing housing assembly as outlined in the
Overhaul Manual. (Refer to Overhaul Manual 290.3, 72-50-04.) Observe the following

NOTE: If the heat shield on Bearing Housing Part Nos. 1-140-590-04/-07

requires repair, replace with Bearing Housing Part No. 1-140-590-09.

(a) If applicable; replace Bearing Housing Part No. 1-140-590-04/-07 with Part Nos. 1-
140-590-09/R10.

CAUTION: WITH BEARING IN HOUSING, THE PIN MUST BE LOCATED
TOWARDS THE FORWARD EDGE.

(b) Replace No. 3 Bearing Part Nos. 1-300-584-01/-02 with Part No. 1-300-665-01.

(c) If Part Nos. 1-300-015-02/04 are installed; replace No. 1 and No. 4 Bearings with
Part No. 1-300-663-01 at both positions in accordance with SB T53-0180.

(d) Replace Second Stage Turbine Rotor Assembly Part No. 1-140-550-07 with Part
No. 1-140-650-09, as stated in section C.

(e) Verify identification number and method for Power Turbine Rotor and Bearing
Housing Assembly from Part No. 1-140-530-06 to Part No. 1-140-530-14.
Alternatively, use Part No. 1-140-530-17 with PM Astroloy power turbine disc.

(4) Assemble the gas producer components as directed in Overhaul Manual 290.3,
72-00-00. Observe the following part number changes:

(a) Replace Rear Bearing Housing Assembly Part No. 1-110-590-02 with Part No.
1-110-470-13.

INSTALLED BEARING.

(b) Replace No. 2 Bearing Part Nos. 1-300-176-03/-04 or 1-300-584-02 with Part No.
1-300-665-01.

(c) If required; replace Retaining Plate Part No. 1-110-181-06 with Part No.
1-110-181-10.

(d) If required, replace Outer Gas Producer Sealing Ring Part No. 1-110-161-03 with
Part No. 1-110-376-08.

(e) Replace eight Bolts Part No. 1-110-137-01 with Part No. STD3061-08 that secure
the outer gas producer sealing ring to the bearing housing.

(f) Replace two Studs Part No. 1-100-131-04 and two special Nuts Part No.
1-110-134-01 with two Bolts Part No. MS9171-10, for a total of eight Bolts, Part
No. MS9171-10. Bolts secure nozzle, deflector, and bearing housing to the air
diffuser housing. (See Figure 2.)

(g) Add two Bolts Part No. AN115408 to secure the bearing housing to air diffuser

1-110-134-01.

Replace Seal and Retainer Assembly Part No. 1-110-600-05, consisting of Seal
Part Nos. 1-300-174-02/-03, Seal Retainer Part No. 1-300-194-01, and Retaining

1-110-720-02.

(i) Replace three Bolts Part No. 1-140-157-02 that secure the seal and retainer
assembly to the bearing housing with three Screws Part No. AN115410.

(j) Replace the First Gas Producer Nozzle Part No. 1-110-520-19 with Part No.

(k) Replace First Stage Gas Producer Turbine Rotor Assembly Part Nos.
1-100-880-09/-12 with the following:

1 First Turbine Gas Producer Rotor Assembly Part Nos. 1-101-100-13

containing PM Astroloy disc.

(l) Install Disc and Spacer Assembly Part No. 1-101-650-01.

(m) If required, replace Second Stage Gas Producer Turbine Rotor Assembly Part
Nos. 1-100-820-06/-08 with Part Nos. 1-101-360-04 or 1-101-360-07.

(n) Replace 20 Bolts Part No. 1-110-262-01 that secure the second stage gas
producer turbine nozzle with Bolts Part No. MS9705-11.

(5) Assemble the combustor turbine assembly, as outlined in the Overhaul Manual. (Refer
to Overhaul Manual 290.3, 72-00-00.) Observe the following part number changes:

(a) Replace Power Turbine Rotor and Bearing Housing Assembly Part No.
1-140-530-06 with Part No. 1-140-530-14.

(h) If applicable, Replace Second Stage Power Rotor Part No. 1-140-272-04. Affected
serial numbers listed in AD 96-17-01.

(i) Assemble using the following Thermocouple Harness Assembly Part Nos.
1-300-563-01/-02.

(j) Use a vibropeen etching tool to reidentify Combustor Turbine Assembly from

Accessories Part No. 1-170-330-08 becomes Part No. 1-170-330-30.
No re-identification is required.

(6) Installation of piping and accessories.

(a) Replace Regulator Part Nos. 1-170-240-60/-61/-91 with Part No. 1-170-240-93 or
Part No. 1-170-780-01 in compliance with SBT53-L-703-0096.

(b) Overspeed Governor Part No. 1-160-850-23 TSO: 0.0 must be installed.

1 Since TSO is 0.0; ensure Engine Logbook and Compliance Records have a
record of compliance to SB T53-0141 and concurrent requirements.

(c) Fuel Control Part No. 1-170-780-01 TSO: 0.0 must be installed.

1 Since TSO is 0.0; ensure Engine Logbook and Compliance Records have a
record of compliance to SB T53-0141 and concurrent requirements.

(d) Install Thermocouple Harness Assembly Part Nos. 1-300-563-01/-02 into

Connector Part No. 1-300-564-01. Lockwire three screws.

(e)

Install Thermocouple Lead Part No. 1-300-599-01 onto Connector Part No.
1-300-564-01. Tighten, lockwire, and secure to the engine to prevent damage
during shipping.

(7) Accessory Drive Gearbox.

(a) If applicable; rework Accessory Drive Gearbox Part No. 1-080-250-025 to 1-080-
250-27 in accordance with SB T53-0098.

(b) Inspect planet and output gears as outlined in SB T53-L-703-0133.

NOTE: Certain gears will be marked “S/B 0133” or “SPR” after the serial
number, as so noted in the logbook of the engine. This service bulletin
does not apply to those gears.

(c) Install new Starter Generator Lip Seal for Accessory gearbox Assembly in
compliance with SB T53-0156.

(d) If Gearbox case Part No. 1-080-340-08 is installed; perform inspections as

required per SB T53-0175.

E. Test the gas turbine engine. Refer to the Overhaul Manual referenced in paragraph 1.F.
(Refer to Overhaul Manual 290.3, 72-00-00.)

F. Reidentify the gas turbine engine.

NOTE: The suffix “Z” after the engine serial number indicates the engine was converted
from a T53-L-13B.

G. To obtain a new engine data plate, completely fill out the request for replacement nameplate
form at the end of these EFI instructions and return to Honeywell Aerospace at Fax: (602) 231-

new data plate with engine data generated from the test cell run following this conversion will
be made and returned to Airborne Engines Ltd. and the old data plate will be destroyed.
