Connections 1 - Ch.6 Bolted Shear Connections - Exercise Solutions (1 of 2) (222-229) Rev1

This document provides the solutions to homework exercises involving bolted shear connections. For the first exercise, the document calculates the factored load, then performs design checks for the beam, clip angles, end tear resistance, remaining bolts, bolt shear resistance, and supporting column to confirm the connection is adequate. For the second exercise, it similarly calculates the factored load, and performs design checks for the beam's shear and bending resistances with a cope, and the block shear resistance, to confirm the connection is adequate.

Part II: Standard Connections, Chapter 6 - Bolted shear connections - Exercise 1 - Ref. P.222

Double-angle, Bolted-welded Beam to Column Web Connection

Calculate the connecton resistance and confirm it is adequate for the applied factored load.
Consider the ultimate limit states design checks for the various connection components based on slides 217 through 219.

Factored design load: 60%Vr

Beam: W530x66, 350W
Column: W250x73, 350W
Angle: L76x76x6.4, 300W
Bolts: 4 rows of 3/4" dia. A325, gauge = 45 mm in angles (100 mm overall), pitch = 80 mm, end distance = 35 mm
Horiz. "short" slotted holes in angles (13/16" x 1")
(See sheet 3 of Class 17 additional notes for basic clip angle/bolt arrangement)
Weld design not required (we will cover eccentric weld design next class)
Note: Beam web block shear check not required since beam is not coped.

Solution:
