Lecture 01

This document provides an overview of domestic and industrial electrical installations and safety equipment. It discusses the components of single phase distribution systems like MCBs and MCCBs. It describes the working principles and characteristics of B, C, and D type MCBs. The document also covers residual current devices (RCDs), single phase energy meters, industrial MCCBs, lighting circuits, and domestic wiring diagrams. Industrial installations require switching equipment suitable for higher power applications compared to domestic installations.

Single Phase Installation System
Consumer Unit – Distribution Board
Main Components of Single Phase Distribution
System

• MCB – Miniature Circuit Breaker

• MCCB – Molded Case Circuit Breaker
• RCD (RCCB, ELCB) – Residual Current Device
Main Components of Single Phase Distribution
System

• MCB -
Monitors the current and breaks the current during overload or
short circuit. This one is used for low power applications.

• MCCB –
Same operation as MCB, but used for high current applications
specially in commercial and industrial applications.

System

3 – Poles with 4 – Poles MCB

Neutral MCB
MCB Characteristics – Tripping Curve

1. Tripping of overload protection (Thermal tripping device):

The higher the current, the shorter the tripping time

2. Tripping of short-circuit protection (Magnetic tripping device):

If the current exceeds the threshold of this protection device, the
breaking time is less than 10 milliseconds

MCB Working Principle
B, C & D Type MCBs - Exercise

Ex 01: A residential electrical panel has a total connected load of 6000 watts. A
20-ampere MCB protects the panel. Determine whether the MCB is
appropriately sized for the load and can handle it safely.
(Hint: P = VI can be used)
B, C & D Type MCBs - Exercise
Ex 01: A residential electrical panel has a total connected load of 6000 watts. A 20-ampere MCB protects
the panel. Determine whether the MCB is appropriately sized for the load and can handle it safely.
(Hint: P = VI can be used)

Ans: P = VI
I = P/V
I = 6000/ 230
I = 26.1 A

20 MCB is not sufficient for the protection of the given equipment. Since that, it is better to use a 30A rated
MCB.
B, C & D Type MCBs - Exercise
Ex 02: Do the required calculations and identify the suitable MCBs for each electrical item.
Circuit 01 - 4 Fluorescent bulbs
Circuit 02 - 1 Refrigerator
Circuit 03 - Air Conditioner
Circuit 04 - TV

Item Power (W) Demand Factor

Fluorescent Bulb 20 0.6

Refrigerator 600 1

Air-Conditioner 3 kW 1

Television 100 0.6

B, C & D Type MCBs - Exercise
Answers :

Circuit 01 - P = No of Items x Power x Demand Factor = 4 x 20 x 0.6 = 48 W

I = P/V = 48/ 230 = 0.21 A

Circuit 02 - P = No of Items x Power x Demand Factor = 600 x 1 = 600 W

I = P/V = 600/ 230 = 2.6 A

Circuit 03 - P = No of Items x Power x Demand Factor = 3000 x 1 = 3000 W

I = P/V = 3000/ 230 = 13 A

Circuit 04 - P = No of Items x Power x Demand Factor = 3000 x 1 = 3000 W

I = P/V = 3000/ 230 = 13 A
RCD – Residual Current Device
RCD monitors the current different between the live and
neutral and disconnects the power

Human Body Current Repones
Imperceptible: Slightly
Muscular Contraction:
Muscle contraction is the activation
of tension-generating sites within
muscle cells.
Ventricular Fibrillation:
Ventricular fibrillation is a type of
irregular heart rhythm (arrhythmia).
During ventricular fibrillation, the
lower heart chambers contract in a
very rapid and uncoordinated
manner. As a result, the heart
doesn't pump blood to the rest of
the body.

AC current (15 – 100Hz) affects the human body when it passes from the left hand to the feet.
