Lesson Outline in Grade 6

This lesson outline summarizes teaching the difference between expressions and equations in a 6th grade mathematics class. It includes activities like a game to help students identify expressions and equations. The teacher will discuss that expressions contain numbers and operations but no equal sign, while equations contain numbers, operations and an equal sign to show two expressions are equal. Students will then practice identifying expressions and equations, and represent the differences and similarities using a Venn diagram.

Lesson Outline in

Mathematics Grade 6

Jonafe S. Macasero

1.Objectives:

At the end of 50 minute discussion, the pupil should be able to;

a. differentiate expression from equation,

b. identify expression from equation, and

II.Subject Matter:

A. Topic: Differentiating Expression from Equation

B. References:
C. Materials:

III.Learning Procedure:

 Greetings
 Class Prayer
 Checking of Attendance
 Review of Class Agreement

A. Activity:
Before the lesson start teacher will give make a game called ‘Choose the #’
Mechanics of the game:
1. The student who seated in the chair were I put “You’re a lucky
contestant!”will the one to choose a number.
2. Every number has a corresponding question to answer.

Questions.

1.A mathematical symbol used to indicate equality or placed between things

that have the same value. Equal sign

2.What do you call the answer to the division problem or it is the result obtain
by division? Quotient

3. What do you call a numbers that cannot be divided by two or if we will

divide it by two it leave a remainder of 1. Odd numbers

4. Barangay San Agustin has a population of 35 879 . What digit is in the

thousand place? 5

5. 1 275+ 875= 2 150

The teacher will give solving problem with a corresponding question.

1.Maria and her mother prepared orange juice. She prepared 9 glasses while
her mother prepared 8 glasses. How many glasses of orange juice did they
make in all?
 What is asked in the problem?
- The total glasses of orange juice they had made
 What are the given facts?
- 8 glasses of orange juice and 9 glasses of orange juice
 What operation is needed?
- addition
 How do you solve the problem?
-8+9= n
8+9= 17, therefore Maria and her mother prepared 17 glasses of orange
juice.

B. Discussion:
Lets rewrite and read by student
8+9---expression
8+9= 17---equation
Teacher will ask question about the difference about 8 + 9 and 8 + 9 =17?
8+9 has no equal sign while 8 + 9= 17 has an equal sign

C. Input:
8+9 is an expression because it consist of numbers joined by operation symbol
and does not have an equal sign.It is composed only two numbers ( 9 and 8)
joined by the operation symbol (+).

Some examples of expression are:

 1+ (6x8)
 5bx8
 2 x (6/2)
 129 x 12-8
 9y(8+7)

8+9= 17 is an equation?Why?

8+9= 17 is an equation because it consist of numbers joined by operation

symbol with an equal sign.

An equation consist of letters , numbers or a combination of letters and

numbers joined by operation symbol with an equal (=) sign which shows that
two expressions on both sides are equal.

Some examples of equation are:

 69- 12= 57
 3n + 9= 12
 66= 51 +15
 25+ 15=65 – 25
 50= 10+ 8 x 5
Tell whether an expression or an equation

1. 91÷ 13= 4 + 3 equation

2. ( 4 x 10 )/5 expression
3. 7 –( 6x 3)= 25 equation
4. 150- 85 = 65 equation
5. ( 3 x 25)- 5 expression

D. Deepening:

Teacher will ask students some question regarding expression and equation.

1. Who can give an example of expression?

2. Who can give an example of equation?
3. Scarlet had 12 days to read a book. She needs to read 26 pages each day.
How many pages does the book have?

E. Activity:
Direction: Give the differences and similiraties of expression and equation
using Venn diagram.

Expression Equation
Similarities

differences differences

D.Synthesis:

Evaluation:

Directions. Tell whether the phrases refer to an expression or an equation.

1. 3b+ 9=12
2. 2 x (6/2)
3. 64 = 51+ 13
4. 10 x 5 = 50
5. 6 x (5-3)
Assignment:

Direction: Give 5 phrases of expression and transform it into equation.
