1. a) Describe with aid of a labelled diagram the construction and operation of a surface-
emitting LED. (14 marks)
b) A relay is controlled by a photo conductive cell whose resistance is 100kΩ when
illuminated and 1 kΩ when in the dark. The relay is supplied with 10mA from a
30V supply when the cell is illuminated.
(i) Sketch the circuit
(ii) Calculate the required series resistor. (6 marks)

2. a) Describe the construction and operation of a silicon controlled rectifier by use of a

two transistor analogy. (10 marks)
b) Show with an aid of a circuit diagram and waveform how a triac may be used to
control the brightness of theatre lights connected to the mains. (10 marks)

3. a) The following table shows some oscilloscope controls and their functions. Complete
the table.
Control Function
INTENSITY

FOCUS

Allow the horizontal scale of the V/t graph to be

changed.
VOLTS/DIV

Allows the entire V/t graph to be from side to

side on the screen.
Y-POS

(6 marks)

b) The notation x1x0 represents a two-bit binary number that can have any value (00,
01, 10 or 11), for example, when x1=1 and x0=0, the binary number is 10, and so on.
Similarly, y1y0 represents another two-bit binary numbers. Using x 1, x0, y1, and y0
inputs, whose output will be high only when two binary numbers x 1x0 and y1y0 are
equal.
(i) Draw the truth table. (2 marks)
(ii) Find a simplified sum-of-product expression using XNOR and AND gates.
(1 mark)
(iii) Design a logic circuit for the expression in (ii) above. (3 marks)
c) (i) Implement the logic circuit for Half Adder (HA) using NAND gates only.
(4 marks)
(ii) Design a combinational logic circuit that will perform this operation:
10112 + 11012 (use full adder only) (4 marks)

4. You are presented with a set of requirements under which an inductance policy will be
issued. The applicant must be;
i. A married under female 25 years old or over, or
ii. A female under 25 years, or
iii. A married male under 25 years who has not been involved in a car accident, or
iv. A married male who has been involved in a car accident, or
v. A married male 25 years or over who has not been involved in a car accident.
The variables w, x, y and z assume the truth value 1 in the following cases;
W=1, if applicant has been involved in a car accident.
X=1, if applicant is married.
Y=1, if applicant is a male
Z=1, if applicant is under 25 years

a) You are required to find an algebraic expression which assumes the value 1
wherever the policy should be issued. (12 marks)
b) Simplify the above expression and suggest a simpler set of requirements. (8 marks)

5. a) What is a microprocessor? (1 mark)

b) Describe the functions of the THREE buses that are part of a typical microcomputer
system. (6 marks)
c) (i) Define the term failure as used in electronic items. (1 mark)
(ii) Differentiate between catastrophic and degradation failure. (2 marks)
d) Draw a labelled manufacturing cost/reliability curve(s) of electronic equipment and
explain its shape. (10 marks)

6. a) (i) Explain the difference between combinational logic circuit and sequential
logic circuits. (4 marks)
(ii) Use a labelled diagram to show how the D-type flip-flop can be connected in
a toggling mode. (2 marks)
b) (i) Distinguish between synchronous and asynchronous counters. (2 marks)
(ii) State the type and the number of the logic devices required for construction of
MOD – 64 synchronous counter. (2 marks)
c) (i) State the difference between Demultiplexin and Decoder. (2 marks)
(ii) With aid of a diagram explain the principle of operation of shift in shift
around register. (8 marks)

7. a) State the meaning of the following terminologies as used in memory devices:

(i) Byte (1 mark)
(ii) Memory cell (1 mark)
(iii) Memory word (1 mark)
b) A certain Memory has a capacity of 4K X 8. Determine:
(i) The number of data input and data output lines (2 marks)
(ii) The number of address lines (1 mark)
(iii) The capacity in Bytes (1 mark)
c) Explain the construction of a RAM using a labelled block diagram. (13
