ECE 2303 – QUIZ (Attempt before we meet for our next class on 25/10/2023)

a) Combined sieve analysis performed on 350 gm dry soil sample. The sample was divided into
coarser and finer fractions by washing it through a 75microns sieve. The fine fraction was 125
g. The coarser fraction was used for the sieve analysis yielding the data is as shown in Table Qa
(i) and 50 g of the finer fraction was used for the hydrometer analysis and the results are tabulated
in Table Qa (ii). Atterberg limits were determined from the soil sample and the results are as
shown in Table Qa (iii).

ii) Classify the soil based on USCS classification system. [8 Marks]

iii) Calculate the plasticity modulus and plasticity product. [2 Marks]

iv) Does this soil meet the requirements of a filter material according to Terzaghi and Peck
design requirements? Show your workings. [2 Marks]

v) What would be the strength of this soil based on liquidity index (state of the soil in the
field) if the natural water content is 43.5%? [2 Marks]

RANDOM ASSESSMENT TEST – To be submitted by 11.00 am on 25/10/2023
1. The results in Tables Q1 (a) (i) and Q1 (a) (ii) were obtained after carrying out unspecified
laboratory tests on a soil sample. Determine the value of air content for this soil mass, considering
a typical sample with a mass of 2290g and a volume of 1.15 x 10-3 m3. If the soil mass is found to
have a relative density of 79.6% and a voids ratio value of 0.92 in its loosest possible state,
determine its voids ratio in its densest possible state. [10 Marks]
Table Q1 (a) (i)
1. Mass of tin + wet soil 100.88g
2. Mass of tin + dry soil 86.89g
3. Mass of tin empty 20.52g

Mass of pyconometer Bottle + Soil + Water, M3 (g) 169.04 177.38
Mass of pyconometer + Water, M4 (g) 144.24 146.2

2. One kg of dry soil was subjected to sieve analysis. The mass of soil retained on each sieve is:

Plot the grain size distribution curve and compute the % gravel, sand and fine soil; also find D10,
D30, D60, Cc and Cu co-efficient. Comment on the nature of the soil. [10 Marks]
3. A soil sample has the following characteristics in its natural state, volume of 0.3m3 and wet weight
of 5500N. After oven drying the weight reduced to 4911N. Gs = 2.74, calculate the moisture
content, bulk unit weight, dry unit weight, void ratio, porosity and degree of saturation. [6 Marks]
4. Soil from two borrow areas A and B is to be used to construct fill in the construction of a storage
lagoon. The insitu properties of the soil at these sites are as shown in Table below:
Soil properties Void ratio Natural water Specific Cost of excavation,
content Gravity transportation and compaction

a placement water content of (20 + 10)%. (where X is the last digit in your Registration Number
(i.e. the rightmost digit. Example ENC211-065X/2021)). The soil will be excavated and
transported to the site using 10 m3 trucks. The volume of soil increases by 10% during excavation
and dumping of soil in the trucks. The soil will then be compacted on site by pneumatic rubber
tyred rollers with some required amount of water added to it. Water charges per truck is KShs
1500. Which of the two borrow areas is more economical? [9 Marks]

(To be done in groups of two as formed in the last physical class and remember to indicate your
numbers)
