NUMBERS

There are two main types of numbers:

Cardinal Numbers - 1 (one), 2 (two) etc. (Used mainly for counting)

Ordinal Numbers - 1st (first), 2nd (second) etc. (Used mainly for putting things in a sequence)

Cardinal Numbers

Cardinal numbers are normally used when you:

 count things: I have two brothers. There are thirty-one days in January.
 give your age: I am thirty-three years old. My sister is twenty-seven years old.
 give your telephone number: Our phone number is two-six-three, three-eight-four-seven. (481-
2240)
 give years: She was born in nineteen seventy-five (1975). America was discovered in fourteen
ninety-two

Notice how we divide the year into two parts. This is the form for year up to 1999. For the year 2000
and on, we say two thousand (2000), two thousand and one (2001), two thousand and two (2002) etc.

Ordinal Numbers

You can normally create Ordinal numbers by adding -TH to the end of a Cardinal Number.

Ordinal numbers are normally used when you:

 give a date: My birthday is on the 27th of January. (Twenty-seventh of January)

 put things in a sequence or order: Liverpool came second in the football league last year.
 give the floor of a building: His office is on the tenth floor.
 have birthdays: He had a huge party for his twenty-first birthday.

Asking the time

Here are some phrases you can use when you want to know the time:

 What's the time?

 What time is it?
 Have you got the right time?
 What time do you make it?

Telling the time

To tell someone what the time is, we can say "The time is..." or, more usually, "It's...". Here is a typical
dialogue:

Question: What's the time, please?

Answer: It's three o'clock.

The chart below shows you two different ways to tell someone what the time is.

more formal less formal

It's... It's...
3.00 three o'clock three
3.03 three (minutes) past three three (oh) three
3.05 Five (minutes) past three three (oh) five
3.09 nine (minute)s past three three (oh) nine

Note:

The ways to express the time in English:

 By saying the hour first and then followed by the minute, this is the easiest way.
(look at the chart of less formal)
 By saying the minute first and then followed by the hour. This way use past if the minute 01 – 30
and we use to if the minutes 31 – 59 (look at the chart of more formal above)
American also use after and before, of or till.
e.g. ten after (past) two. a quarter before/of/till(to) eleven
In English 30 minutes = half
BUKU INFORMASI Hal : 13
15 minutes = a quarter
Use o’clock only on the hour. We do not use o’clock with am/pm.
(Example; 7:00 - seven o’clock)

 To clarify whether you mean the time before twelve o’clock, we could use in the morning, after
twelve o’clock and before six o’clock we could use in the afternoon and after six o’clock we
shoul used in the evening, and at night.
 Use a.m (ante meridiem) between 00.00 to 12.00 (at noon) and p.m (post meridiem) but
Unusual use a.m and p.m in more formal (with past or to)

Before asking the time to someone, we usually start with the phrase "Excuseme".
Some expressions are often used to ask the time, among others:

- Excuse me. What time is it? It is seven o’clock.

- Excuse me, what`s the time?

- Excuse me, can you tell me the correct time?

- Excuse me. I wonder if you could tell me the time.

- Excuse me. Have got the time?

- Excuse me. May I know what time is it?

- Excuse me. Do you know what time is it?

- Excuse me. Do you happen to have the time?

To make easier, pay attention to the picture!
