Comments/Suggestions:
The relevance of this subject is key to being knowledgeable about older adults. It
is good to have this subject because we can use and apply it in our Geria Duty.
The activities were aligned with a course topic. The content is informative, but
there are some parts of the text where I cannot understand its message.
Congratulations for completing all the topics. May the learning you derived from
this activity contribute to your development as an effective and efficient nurse.
NARRATIVE REPORT:
The Care of Older Adults (NCMB 314) subject taught me a lot about their physical, sensory, and mental
changes, age-related changes, and how to care for and support older adults. Since all my grandmothers
and grandfathers died when I was young, I don’t know much about older adults. Actually, I am a little
bit scared of them because they are always mad, moody, and vulnerable. I saw their attitude on
television series and also the perceptions of mine to them. But there is a part of me that is soft-hearted
toward older people because I saw them in my grandma and grandpa. I couldn’t give them my care and
love.
I think this subject will help me see older adults' attitudes, how cute they are when they smile, and
how great they are. All the contents of this course teach me how to take care of them, how to properly
communicate with them, and how to understand them. I have not yet scheduled for Geria Duty, so I
think this is a good opportunity after this semester to apply what I have learned in this subject. Caring
for the elderly requires a lot of patience, empathy, and understanding. It is kindness that makes me
take care of the elderly, and I hope that my experience with them will enhance my knowledge,
empathy, and skills. I also learned about ethical and legal principles and effective communication with
older adults. In addition to that, I learned in the module about the difference between older people in
1960 and older people right now, where all things are high-tech and advanced. This will probably have
an impact on their lives because of their adjustments to high-tech materials. But I know older people
can keep up with new advancements. I hope I can give them a wonderful opportunity to create
laughter and conversation with elderly people. I hope they can see me as a good student nurse.
In conclusion, I have learned so much about this subject, even though this is always a synchronous
class. We only have first face-to-face discussion. There is part of me that wants to have face-to-face
discussions. But I totally understand Ma’am San Diego since she is also in duty. All in all, it was fun to
learn about older people. I think when February 2024 comes, as my groupmates and I have Geria duty,
I can proudly say that I am not scared of older adults anymore. I hope my future self will pursue being a
registered geriatric nurse.
