industry professionals. It is specifically curated to cover a range of information science skills
- starting from the fundamentals and progressing to more complex, hands-on applications.

COURSE HIGHLIGHTS

Foundations This course introduces fundamental ideas of the

of Information Information Age, focusing on the value,
organization, use, and processing of information.
The course is organized as a survey of these
ideas, with readings from the research literature.

Data Mining This course will introduce students to the

and Discovery concepts and techniques of data mining for
knowledge discovery. It includes methods
developed in the fields of statistics, large-scale
data analytics, machine learning, pattern
recognition, database technology and artificial
intelligence for automatic or semi-automatic
analysis of large quantities of data to extract
previously unknown interesting patterns.

Data Analysis This course provides an overview of the various

and Visualization concepts and skills required for effective data
visualization. It presents principles of graphic
design, programming skills, and statistical
knowledge required to build compelling
visualizations that communicate effectively to
target audiences.

Introduction to This course will introduce the fundamentals of

Machine Learning machine learning, describe how to implement
several practical methods for pattern recognition,
feature selection, clustering, and decision
making for reward maximization, and provide a
foundation for the development of new machine
learning algorithms.

06
COURSE HIGHLIGHTS

Data Warehousing and This course will utilize concepts, frameworks, and
Analytics in the Cloud best practices for designing a cloud-based data
warehousing solution and explore how to use
analytical tools to perform analysis on your data.

For the identified project, learners will review and

mine existing data and associated data sources
with the support of mentors, and develop initial
insights and present the outcomes.

Text Retrieval This course will cover the fundamental

and Web Search knowledge necessary to build systems such as
web crawling, index construction and
compression, boolean, vector-based, and
probabilistic retrieval models, text classification
and clustering, link analysis algorithms such as
PageRank, and computational advertising.

TESTIMONIALS

The program is delightful, and the professor taught me so much. When people asked what I was
going to school for, I narrowed it down to: if you have a problem, I can fix it with a computer. I love
the fact that it’s a little bit of everything. I have absolutely enjoyed the program, and to
prospective students, I would say that it will give you access to more and more skills. It will give
you opportunities to learn more, the pay raise is nice as well and you'll access more high-growth
career opportunities.

DAVID PHILLIPS
Master of Science in Information Science: Machine Learning,
School of Information, University of Arizona

I found the research being done at iSchool in AI, game design, and ML very cool. I really wanted
to be here, develop things, and get involved in academia. I’ve had wonderful experiences with
the programs and courses here. I really enjoyed learning about topics I had never really studied
before, and I got to explore more of these ideas through a personal communication line with the
professor as well. I see interdisciplinary work all across our program and we’re able to share a lot
of ideas that wouldn’t happen if we sectioned ourselves off. Even if you don’t know what you
want to do, talk to people! The faculty here find time to talk to learners and everyone has your
best interests at heart.

LOREN CHAMPLIN
PhD Student in Information Science,
School of Information, University of Arizona

What I’m most passionate about in this program is that anyone can be a data scientist. I’m really
passionate about bringing the power of data science to people who are like me, or not like me
but also wouldn’t have thought to pursue data science in the first place. I’ve been exposed to
different projects in various areas working with the lab sessions, allowing me to practice my skills
in a breadth of areas. The university and program cater to people of all different backgrounds,
and I’m very passionate about that aspect. One of the most thrilling things has been seeing more
students who are interested in being data scientists come into my class thinking ‘this is what I
want to do’...I think this really reflects the field and industry as a whole.
