B’Koach,
The
Miracle
Prayer
Known as the “42-letter Name of G-d,” Ana B’Koach is
composed of 42 words written in seven sentences of six
words each. Each of the seven sentences correspond
to a day of the week and to one of
the Kabbalistic sefirot. The letters that make
up Ana B’Koach are known as the 42 Letter Name of G’d.
It is said that in the Ana B’Koach is hidden the first 42
letters of the book of Genesis, beginning with the
word beresheet and ending with the word vavohoo.

Ana B’Koach is said on Shabbat, holidays, and is also part


of the Bedtime Shema. Many have a custom to sing it by
repeating each word seven times during Maariv and also
after lighting the candles on Chanukah.
´ Ana B’Koach is an ancient poem believed to be composed in the 1st century CE
by the great Kabbalist Rabbi Nehunyah ben haKanah.
´ The poem portrays the 42 names of G-d and consisted of seven lines.

the long version of the Holy Name, which has forty-

´ Now, it is necessary to mitigate the judgments at their root. The root of 14 = 4 + 10
judgment is in Binah (Understanding), as it is written (Proverbs 8:14), “I am binah
(understanding); I have strength.” Therefore, through the placing of hands on
the money, the judgments are mitigated.
14 X 3 = 42
´ This is because there are three hands in Binah: there are two hands—the “great
hand” and the “strong hand”—and the synthesis of the two is the “exalted
hand.” Thus, by virtue of the money/judgments coming into the hands—the
three hands that are in Binah—the judgments are mitigated at their root. For ‫אהיה‬
their root is Binah, in which are the aforementioned three hands. ‫יהו‬
´ A person must mitigate the judgment in this World of Action by means of the ‫איההיוה‬
three hands that are in each of the three worlds which are higher than this
World of Action—namely, Nearness, Creation and Formation. 10 + 28 + 4 = 42
´ When the judgment of the World of Action is mitigated by the three hands in
Formation, it is mitigated by means of the Name of Forty-Two: Ana B’koach
Gedulah…. This is because forty-two is equal to three times YaD (hand).

´ Now, it is necessary to mitigate the judgments at their root. The root of 14 = 4 + 10
judgment is in Binah (Understanding), as it is written (Proverbs 8:14), “I am binah
(understanding); I have strength.” Therefore, through the placing of hands on
the money, the judgments are mitigated.

´ This is because there are three hands in Binah: there are two hands—the “great
hand” and the “strong hand”—and the synthesis of the two is the “exalted
hand.” Thus, by virtue of the money/judgments coming into the hands—the
three hands that are in Binah—the judgments are mitigated at their root. For ‫אהיה‬
their root is Binah, in which are the aforementioned three hands. ‫יהו‬
´ A person must mitigate the judgment in this World of Action by means of the ‫איההיוה‬

In the Bible, the name "Shadai" is first mentioned in the book of
